Language Proficiencies

Instead of acquiring your language proficiencies from your race or background, use the following rules to determine what languages your character speaks:

Language Fluency Scores Instead of considering proficiency to be equivalent to fluency, languages will instead have "fluency scores". When attempting to read or speak in a language that a character is not 100% fluent in, the character rolls percentile dice. If the outcome of the dice roll is at or below the fluency score, the character is able to understand the language; if the outcome is above the fluency score, the character is unable to understand the language.

Every time you level up, you can choose to increase the fluency score of one language you are proficient in by 5%. Alternatively, you can forgo the 5% increase to add an additional language starting with 20% proficiency (so long as your character has encountered the language enough in game to justify them starting to speak it).

Beyond leveling up, if you wish to learn a new language, or increase the fluency score of one language you are already proficient in, you can do so by paying to increase your understanding of the language. Learning a new language costs 1 gold per day, and your fluency score for that language increases by 1% for every 2 days you spend learning that language.

Base Language Proficiencies You are 100% fluent in any language proficiencies granted to you by your class (i.e. Druidic or Thieves' Cant). You are also 100% fluent in the Common language of the region of play (i.e. you are fluent in Manian if the campaign takes place on the Faylen Continent).   You may then choose one additional language that you are 100% fluent in from the "Base Language List" below. Consider what language fluencies would make sense for your character's history and position in life.   Additional Language Proficiencies Any additional language proficiencies that your character has access to from backgrounds, feats, etc. count as Additional Language Proficiencies. Your character is not as familiar with these languages, and the fluency score of these languages reflects that:
  • 1st Additional Language Fluency: 80%
  • 2nd Additional language Fluency: 70%
  • 3rd Additional Language Fluency: 60%
  • 4th Additional Language Fluency: 50%
  • 5th Additional Language Fluency: 40%
  • 6th Additional Language Fluency and beyond: 30%
Common Languages:
The languages listed below are all Common languages that are spoken throughout Tellandria. The DM will tell you what languages are commonly spoken in the region that your campaign will take place in: Racial Languages:
The languages listed below are connected to a specific race or species found on Tellandria. Despite having a strong connection with a specific species, they can be spoken by people of many different racial and cultural backgrounds; some are even used as common tongues in some areas of the world: Planar Languages:
The languages listed below are connected to the planes outside of the Prime Material Plane. These languages are usually only known by individuals who have studied the other planes, or who have strong connections to these planes:
  • Abyssal
  • Celestial
  • Infernal
  • Primordial
  • Sylvan
Additional Languages:
The languages listed below are extremely uncommon, and should only be taken at Level 1 under certain circumstances. Talk with the GM before adding proficiencies in any of these languages:
  • Deep Speech
