Arc Mors

Structure

The city of nercomancers might seem a dark place for outsiders, or those unfamiliar with the cities rules and hierarchy. Most often people who find themselves in Arc Mors are running away from something or starting a new life, for which the city is a perfect hideout due to its minimal communication with the outside world and the confusing maze-like structure of the city streets.

The Grand Necropolis of Arcana Mors

The city of Arcana Mors has slowly developed itself around the academy of Arcana Mors. Much similar in the way of other Gemstone Realms, Arcana Mors was originally designed to be a school for mages and wizards. Their speciality around the subject of death attracted many strange folk to surround their academy. Some gifted their departed loved ones to the academy with impending wishes of "sending them back" if they are brought back to this world. Slowly, as the city rose around Arcana Mors, so did the double doors of the academy close and the infamous Death Doors open.

Resurrector [archaic], Black Mage

While those who remember the old times might respect the academics of Arcana Mors and refer to them as Resurrectors, like many hopeful citizens of Arcana Mors would before, currently most whisper of the wizards as Black Mages. Superstition and rumors surround these powerful individuals, who have studied the art of necromancy and have become adept enough in it to receive a robe in the colours of Arcana Mors. Whispers surround these wizards, windows are shut and children are told not to stare for too long for it is believed by many younger generations that have spent time in the oppressing atmosphere of Arcana Mors that the Black Mages carry with themselves a touch of death, or that a Black Mage might mark their corpse to be used afer their demise. Even worse, some extreme rumors claim that the Black Mages are often causing these deaths to add to their collection in the academy, but these rumors are quelled quickly by the Tomb Men.

Dusk Reverends

Known to have a standing above the Carrion Cloaks, the Dusk Reverends have earned their name by appearing only during times of great distress. After massacres, serial killings or threats of war, these old mages appear from behind the academy walls to offer their console to the people of Arcana Mors. The Dusk Reverends are the nearest thing to an organised church from the academy, but instead of praising deities or lecturing tradition, the Dusk Reverends are offering a two-way connection to the academy where they publish the academys decisions and plans for any calamity the city has suffered, and receive feedback and information on what is going on in the city.

Carrion Cloaks

The Maze-City is a grim shadow of its former self. Out of touch with the people outside, most academics are called "Carrion Cloaks" for their grotesque duty of gathering the dead and returning them behind academy walls. On the rare occasion of the academy recruiting someone new to their ranks, the Carrion Cloaks accompany some higher mages and necromancers on whatever trials they have concocted to determine who is worthy of entry. Terrifying, yet at the same time most of what the locals consider as "law enforcement" the Carrion Cloaks are sometimes seen overlooking construction sites, mainly large portion of the hundreds of statues that decorate buildings and streets of the city.

Tomb-Men

The city of Arc Mors began a large project that has lasted for ceveral decades now, where the city streets and rooftops are dotted with hundreds of statues. While profitable to the Masons Guild, rumors started to spread quickly as Carrion Cloaks were seen overlooking construction of most of these statues. Granted with a powerful ally, the Masons Guild were very strict on not speaking about the project with anyone outside of the guild for such was the pact that was made with Arcana Mors. However, the truth about these grim-looking gargoyles and stonemen has started to unveil itself. Local know not to do crime, and others would do well not to commit any crimes themselves.

Culture

Everyone is free in Arc Mors. The city is largely unguarded, with the exception of some mercenary bands that are paid for added protection by the locals. Receiving protection and rare guidance from the academy of Arcana Mors, the city has been left largely to its own devises and it has spread into many different districts that all unify beneath the Warden-Mayor of Arcana Mors, who is a person in the most direct connection to the Black Mages. The Warden-Mayor might have the resources to check up on some locals and on their backgrounds, but like anyone that has lived for long in the city the Warden-Mayor solemnly believes that anyone crooked or twisted enough to cause issues won't be an issue for long.
Therefore on a casual day one might find a toy shop owned by a former assassin, or a brothel filled with escaped slaves. As long as these people remain within the walls of Arcana Mors, anyone after them must follow the laws of Arcana Mors to do so. Relationship with the academy is varied by every individual citizen in Arc Mors. While some own near-zealous devotion towards the academy and believe themselves to be on "future Eden" once the academy discovers immortality and shares it with rest of the world, an equal amount of people spread terrible rumors on what happens to corpses taken through the Deaths Door. For that is the price of living in Arcana Mors. The city has no cemetary, and corpses are picked up by the Carrion Cloaks and every citizen, current or passing by, admits to these rules as they arrive to the city. This does not mean that religion has no place in the Maze-City. All throughout the labyrinthine streets one can find temples belonging to various gods of the realms. The temples themselves have agreed to the decree of Arc Mors, and relieve their dead to the Carrion Cloaks when they arrive.
