The Castellan Empire

The Emperor sat upon their throne with unquestionable authority in this theocracy. Those chosen to lead Castelle have come from all walks of life, but are all marked at some point in their life by a scar that runs the length of their torso, bending and spreading like the limbs of a tree. When a new Emperor is revealed, they are brought before a council of clerics to determine the validity of their claim. If they are found to be the true heir of this mark, a ceremony is held in which the current Emperor relinquishes his or her power and is killed in a ritualistic ceremony. The new Emperor may rule for a decade, or they may live for centuries before passing along their power. It is because of this unnatural lifespan that many in Castelle believed them to be a vessel of the gods.   Since the fall of most of their cities and the collapse of their formal structure, the Berceauvian Empire became somewhat of a legend. Children were told that if they misbehaved, the Emperor and his priests would take them away in the middle of the night and they would be forced to join his ghostly army. By adulthood, many of these people would laugh at the ridiculous story and use it to mock their friends for acting childish. Because that's all it is, right? Just a ridiculous story...?

Structure

The Emperor is without peer, though the complex web of clerics and priests have control over many aspects of day-to-day life in the Empire. In special situations, particularly in colonies far away from the capital city of Ostiaire, governors or other secular leaders may be allowed to have control over their region. Almost all aspects of religious life, however, are controlled by the Emperor or their chosen representatives, no matter where in the Empire they are.
