The Beginning

Nothing

Before the beginning, there was nothing. Nothing to see, nothing to smell, nothing to hear. Only nothing. And darkness.   Then Ao choose to appear. He claimed the nothing. He then invited the shadows.

The Goddesses

A period of timeless nothing, a misty realm of shadows. A mixing of light and dark before there was anything to separate them. And from these shadows coalesced the beautiful twin goddesses, Selûne and Shar.   The twins loved one another. They loved one another so much that they saw themselves as one being. They complemented one another and brought order to the chaos. As they played with one another, they began to create - heavenly bodies, worlds, life. Their enjoyment of one another began to form the titans.   The first was Chauntea who would being life to their worlds. And the world with life were darkened by the hair and loving embrace of Shar and the face os Selûne gave them light. But they were without warmth - without heat, exposed to the universe.   So Chantea begged the goddesses for heat. A great fire who would share in caring for the life she was creating.

The War of Light & Darkness

For the first time, the twins were divided. To create another to help in the care of their worlds. So, the sisters began first to debate. As they did, other titans sprang into being.   Thinking to end the discord, Selûne reached past the universe and into the realms of Limbo and the Nine Hells. Fighting the pain of the blaze in one hand and the destructive chaos in the other, brought forth a little of each plane, though some spilled creating the plane of fire. Then, bringing her hands together, Helios sprung forth and began to give warmth to Chantea.   With with his creation, enmity grew. Shar was enraged. She attacked Helios, diminishing the heat he was able to give to the universe to the point he could only heat one system of planets. Then she tuned to her sister. Attacking, she began to extinguish the light throughout the universe.   As the battle raged on, their attacks on one another caused titans to form. Becoming desperate, Selûne once again gave of herself for their creation. She tore most of her divine magic from her body and cast it at her sister, shooting through Shar and pulling similar energy from the dark twin.

The Creation of Magic

These combined essences of magic reformed behind Shar as a being of magic - Mystra, the daughter of Selune. Wounded, Shar retreated for a time vowing revenge.   Created as part of the fight to warm and brighten Chantea, Mystra yearned to play a roll in blessing the world. Intended as a way to protect the world, Mystra covered everything with a 'fabric' that many call the weave. Casters of all types tap into the weave to access the raw magic of the goddess Mystra.

Eternal Conflict

  Shar remains powerful, but alone.
Selune, having given much of herself in the creation of Mystra and giving warmth and light to Chantea, waxes and wanes in her power. She often draws strength from he daughter and other like minded deities.
As man arrived on the planets, the battle continued but in their diminished states, the clashes no longer produced titans or other beings.
But Shar will continue to plot and maneuver, for that is her nature.

Summary

The creation of all began in the shadowy mist that became the twin goddesses Selune and Shar.

Variations & Mutation

Disappointed with his daughters constant battle, Ao chose to have a son, Io.
Io often felt caught in the middle of the battle as each of his sisters would petition for his help in subduing the other. Eventually, Io decided that wandering the Outer Planes would be better than to be constantly besieged to harm or trap one of his beloved sisters.   In time, Io grew lonely and began to consider what a perfect race of beings would be. He envisioned dragons and learned all the spells that would ever be. But the seeds of his sisters eternal battle had been planted. When he sought to create his dragons, each was tainted in some way.   When Io died during the dawn war, his thoughts were split giving birth to a son and daughter. Bahamut, god of justice and Tiamat the goddess of greed.
