Widows Wail

Of the Many dangers faced by seafaring folk the widows wail is among the most dangerous. The result of illegal underground experimentation, these unnatural beasts have no natural predators and attack any living being they see.

Many Sailors believe the Widows Wail to be a very large tentacled monster. The name Widows Wail was originally coined by the crew of the Maidens Wrath. A few lucky crew members had been ashore when their ship was attacked by a swarm from shore however it appeared as a single large monster. The wail of the crew on board as they were seemingly devoured by this monster is what led the few remaining men to coin the Term "Widows Wail"

Basic Information

Biological Traits

The Widows Wail is in fact a swarm of smaller beasts. These Beasts were the result of experiments to create creatures that could link together to create a form of organic computer. This was attempted by grafting body parts from a certain breed of jellyfish that can communicate basic thoughts such as "danger over there" or "food here" with a highly intelligent breed of squid. While the experiments were successful the resulting creature reproduced out of control and broke free of containment.

Since all the creatures in the swarm are neurally connected the swarm affects a seemingly singular intelligence with all the sub creatures acting in perfect unison.

Additional Information

Geographic Origin and Distribution

In the wild the smaller organisms creating the widows wail tend to stay in swarms attacking most creatures unforunate to cross its path.

Average Intelligence

Inteligence of the swarm increases with size since the size is directly proportional to the complexity of the swarms neural network
With each creature in the swarm forming just a small portion of the intelligence of the swarm it is incredibly difficult to kill a swarm off. They can overcome most things by sheer attrition defeating most creatures or outside forces before the entire swarm is killed. The Swarm can repopulate reasonably quick so loosing large numbers of the sub creatures is not typically a problem for the beast. Due to the nature of the swarm any attacks that can disrupt the neural connections of the creatures are extremely effective.
Lifespan
indeterminate
I once saw a Widows Wail take down an entire flotilla of battleships. Scariest thing i done ever saw i figure
