Introduction to the Player's Guide

You do not have to apply or create a character sheet to role-play at TamerlaneRP in Second Life or our Discord RP areas. Many people use the facilities in Second Life to do their role-play, which we provide for free to the public. Some people try everything out before taking the next step to build a character using our handbook. The choice is yours.
Your older characters can be integrated easily into our role-play. Old characters from other realms are welcome.

The What And Why Of Roleplaying

Roleplaying, a practice that has been around for centuries, is used in various ways.   Some use it for relaxation, others to explore intricate storylines, and many to have fun with other people. It can also be a tool for learning, a form of therapy, or a way to enhance creativity.   Since the 1970s, roleplaying has allowed people to tell a cooperative story and have a good time.   There's no wrong way to roleplay, as long as everyone involved is having fun. It's a tool to explore different parts of yourself, but always remember to have fun doing it.   The freedom in roleplaying is what makes it so empowering and inspiring.

Roleplaying Styles

While there are many styles of role-play, most people who role-play at TamerlaneRP use the three most common styles: Free Form, Casual, and Narrative-Focused.   You can float behind all three of these, combine them with your method of choice, or use something else altogether.   Remember, if it doesn’t violate any laws, rules of our Second Life Sims or Server rules, Linden Labs, or Discord’s TOS, you're free to roleplay in your own unique way. Embrace your style and let your creativity flow.

Conceptualize Your Character

Creating a character can be a fun process.   You get to make someone different than you and be them for a while.   Or you can make a character much like yourself and see how you react in certain situations.   Or make something in between.   The choices are endless in a role-playing game. One of the first things you want to do is conceptualize your character. What kind of character do you want to play? A fast-talking smuggler who owns his own ship? A noble elf maiden who seeks to reclaim her lost kingdom? A slacker who only wants to find the next bag of potato chips?   The choice is yours. But give yourself an idea of who will represent you in the role-playing world.

Select Your Character’s Race

A good starting place for creating a character is to select a race. TamerlaneRP has several races you can choose from.   Are you that noble elf who patrols the forests?   Are you that confident, Steampunk explorer traveling across the Aether stream?   Would you rather be a vampire, seeking to end your curse?   Talk with a GM (Game Master) if you need help with the specifics of the race. GMs are experienced players who can guide you through the character creation process. Or ask other players about their experiences with a particular race.   If you want to play something random, you can always roll for your race. This means using a random roll table to determine your character's race, creating something you've never played before, or a character you already know.   A random roll table lets you roll your character’s race to create something you never played before, or a character you are already familiar with.   Most characters from other worlds or role-playing locations can fit in at TamerlaneRP. Sometimes it takes a little tweaking, like adjusting their backstory to fit the TamerlaneRP lore; other times, you don’t have to do a thing.
