Harpy

Basic Information

Anatomy

Harpies are humanoid creatures with feathery ears, feathers surrounding their arms, along with bird-like legs that end in talons, along with having tailfeathers. Their most prominent feature is to turn their arms into actual wings, allowing them flight.

Biological Traits

They typically grow to maturity at about 15 years of age, and live to about 70 years.

Genetics and Reproduction

Much like birds, they lay eggs in nests for their young, however their nests are usually found on the ground.

Ecology and Habitats

They typically live in forest areas with lots of trees to perch in, whilst other types of Harpies will prefer canyon regions with open spaces to fly.

Dietary Needs and Habits

They typically feed off of meat, and will use their harmonious voice to lure in prey, snatching them from above with their great amount of strength.

Biological Cycle

They molt their feathers during the summer, and spend a large amount of time preening.

Behaviour

Harpies often love to sing beautiful songs to lure in prey, hypnotizing them with their voice. They'll often attack people, either for food or to protect their territory. They tend to make violent hisses when threatened. People are quick to assume they're rather feral or monstrous, but in reality they're simply living by the rules of survival, and actually do have a sense of community and culture, something that is often overlooked by others.

Additional Information

Uses, Products & Exploitation

Harpies are often hunted for their feathers, which are amazingly useful in medical elixirs, along with being popular in charms. More dangerously, many people like to keep harpies as servants in the Lokari Kingdom, keeping them in cages so they can hear their beautiful songs. Others would rather kill a harpy as they're more seen as monsters than people. Some would even try to clip a harpy's wing to try and keep them from flying away.

Facial characteristics

They typically have humanoid faces with sharp fangs, markings on their faces and sharp eyes.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

They're typically found across forests and cliffside regions.

Average Intelligence

Their intelligence is often overlooked, but they're actually quite intelligent as they're able to outsmart their prey.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Harpies have sharp senses, having amazing levels of sight that can see far distances, and have sharply attuned hearing as well.

Civilization and Culture

Beauty Ideals

Clean, well preened feathers are often a sign of attraction for other Harpies, with bright colorations often being more popular. Their voice is also a rather well appreciated trait of Harpies.

Average Technological Level

They don't have much technological advancement in their culture, being relatively behind the times, however they're satisfied with their traditional ways, as they find distrust in higher technology.

Major Language Groups and Dialects

Their primary language is Ha'shi, a dialect that not many know, but is known to have symbolic meaning, having a lot of chirps, clicks and hisses involved, however they have melodic sound to them, especially in their song. Enslaved Harpies often have their captors try to force them to learn Talish

Common Dress Code

As a coming of age ceremony, when they reach ten years of age, they are gifted markings on their face that define their greatest features, these markings have high levels of symbolism and tend to be dependant on their greatest traits. These markings are as great and as personal of an identity to a Harpy as their very names.

Common Customs, Traditions and Rituals

They have a custom of painting the faces of their own, often using it to identify the most valiant traits of their young.

Common Taboos

They do not have relationships with humans or other races allied with the Lokari Kingdom, those who are found in such a relationship are presumed to be captives.

History

Harpies have always tried to keep to themselves, trying to hunt whatever they can get their talons on for the betterment of their flocks. However, when the humans and Harpies first interacted, there was bloody combat between the two. No one knows which side started the conflict, whether it was Harpies stealing cattles from humanity, or if the humans wished to hunt the Harpiies for their beautiful feathers.   Regardless, Harpies were rid out of their homes, forced to flee further into the wild when the humans made their settlements. Worse still, over time people grew intrigued by the Harpy's deadly siren song, and would hire hunters to try and hunt them down. In retaliation, the Harpies would view mankind as natural enemies, prey to be picked upon.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

They have a large hatred towards any species allied with the kingdom of Lokari, as they've been enslaved, hunted and more by those allied with the kingdom, they hold high distrust for all of the four kingdoms
Lifespan
70 Years
Average Physique
They tend to be light in body, but have powerful muscles to lift up prey.
Body Tint, Colouring and Marking
They typically range from human-like colorations with their skin tones, the color of their feathers and talons are dependant on the type of bird they're based on. For example a crow harpy would have black feathers, whilst a oarrot harpy would have bright colorful feathers. They also tend to have markings on their face that are given to them at a young age, the face markings hold symbolism, and describe the traits at the heart of the Harpy, however only those with a deep understanding of Harpy culture will understand such markings.
