Crash Site

Crash Site is the origin of known human life on Talifar. It is a small city-state where everyone lives inside the hulls of the crashed space ships humans arrived on.

Structure

The government is structured like an academy. The Academy President is voted in by the heads of the various departments. Once established the appointment is a lifetime role. (Until deemed incompetent)

Culture

  • They strive to preserve the academic and scientific culture of their ancestors.
  • Very hierarchical. Advancement is based on gaining degrees.
  • The very small population means everyone knows everyone.

Public Agenda

  • To build ships that will take humans back to Earth.
  • To maintain the knowledge, culture and language of the ancestors throughout the world.
  • Unearthing technological (magic) discoveries from other crash debris in the area

Assets

  • Ancient technology
  • Laboratories
  • Library
  • Greenhouses

History

After a catastrophic crash that accidentally killed a majismontem queen that started a war, the wardens intervened, keeping crashsite from being completely destroyed. The humans and majismontem were incentivised to work with each other, and have lived in relative harmony ever sense.     A leader emerged shortly after the incident called John Founder, who organized the settlement at the site and created the doctrine that would become Returnism. 10 years after the crash a radiation leak from the buried ship’s engines became apparent. Using scavenged technology that did not trigger the warden’s shut-down mechanism, the scientist/magicians created a shield. The relative small size of this protection drastically limited the population size that could be sustained.   Over time the advantage of having access to ‘magical’ items created the need for defense and diplomacy with the outside world. To this end, they built a perimeter wall at the mouth of the valley they are in. Additionally, they built on their mythological status of super powered magicians.   Given that their primary goal is to build a ship, most of their resources are directed towards that end. Culturally everyone is taught that this is possible, though the closer people get to the problems the more of them realize it’s actually a futile endeavor, so attrition by disillusion is common.

Demography and Population

The population is stictly limited to 5,000. Immigration is very tightly enforced, and only students are allowed. The test to enter is intense, and is usually accompanied by the recommendation from a expatriat ambassador.

Territories

Crash Site is located on barren, mountainous tundra, situated in a valley. A road runs past the mouth of the valley from the south to a majismotem crash site. The humans are able to farm in greenhouses utilizing grow lights powered by the ship engines.   As a city-state, Crash Site is a campus of various ship hulls that they live in, and a sports field in the middle, and some livestock grazing fields on the outskirts.   Several miles away, an ejected ship engine has been leaking radiation.

Technological Level

They have access to electricity from their engine, but they follow the rules given to them by the wardens to prohibit explosives, gun powder and internal combustion. Other ancient technology that exists only at Crash Site is nanotechnology - Microscopic robot swarms that decompose matter to reconstitute it in other forms. This process takes a very long time. And they have a shield that effectively deflects the radiation from the leaking ship engine nearby.

Religion

Some residents take Returnism more literally than others. Some perceive more supernatural elements, and some see it strictly materialistically.

Foreign Relations

The Department of Diplomacy trains students to become ambassadors who will be posted in as many human power centers as possible. They also take in young important dignitaries for cultural training and basic science.   Their second most important diplomatic relationship is with Lodestone Spire, which is dedicated to propagating CrashSite’s cultural ideology. Secondmost is the Megoloth Empire that keeps them militarily protected.   The technology that exists in the area has been grandfathered into to the global ban on technology as long as it is not used outside of the region. This happened during the warden diplomacy that occurred right after the crash that killed a majismotem queen. This effectively keeps most kinds of weaponry from being exported. Though small relics can slip through from time to time, and these items become the stuff of legends.

Laws

  • Always be learning
  • Find ways to contribute to the infrastructure
  • Access to some libraries/technology is earned through promotion
  • Free Riders and criminals are deported. (In the summer)

Agriculture & Industry

They grow food staples in greenhouses and algae-based sustenance. They cultivate some meat, but it’s limited.

Trade & Transport

Within the primary human ship hull there is a rail network.

Infrastructure

Their primary housing is the remnants of their ark ship as well as other scrap hulls, pulled into a campus of buildings the serve various purposes. The primary ship engine powers the city. This is the single location on Talifar where electricity is permitted. Since the power is a limited resource, it is strictly regulated. The most important use is to power the shield that keeps the radiation from the broken engine at bay. There are a network of tunnels and covered walkways connecting the buildings due to the extreme temperature in the winter. Inside the primary ark ship there is a mostly still functioning rail tram system.
