Peregrine Haldock

The healer showed up in the Butcher's Wail under everyone's nose. He purchased the drab cottage, and moved in under the cover of night it is told.   Peregrine's door had all eyes upon it for a gander, what little the commoners could witness as he rarely poked his head out of it. The door one morning had a healers mark upon it, but nobody knocked on it, the couple inside were Nuhrish and they are never trusted.   Julius Timmons didn't hesitiate to knock, he wasn't prejudice like most of the rabble in the outer wards. He was mesmorized when he saw Camille, her comely appearance drew him in and then repulsed him as she drew a dirk to run him off.   Peregrine rebuked her temper. He was pleasant to the lad and an arrangement was made between them. He would bring sick people, and Peregrine would try to aid them. In a week he had cured many of skin rashes and a women who was near death from fever.   When the Mist began afflicting many, he requested one brought to him. The healer was puzzled, and regretably that person passed away from the poison. The healer found success by the fourth attempt, healing a young lad of the affliction after studying the concoction when Julius acquired it from the Jack Dobbins ward.   Peregrine was perplexed at this new poison, he could decipher very little of it, realizing some of the plant base was foreign from this land. Julius helped Peregrine in finding an odd man who sold herbs from other distance places named Lucius Vanderlay.   A nervous sort, unliked, and always sold his remedies to the commoners at high prices. Peregrine sent Julius to ask the man to give him something unusual that would numb pain, no matter the costs.   He returned with a dull yellow powder that was unknown to him. He emplored Julius to inquire Lucius as to where he found such a potent thing. The man was rude, and became guarded, pushing the lad away for asking such questions.   He sent him to purchase more but was sent away, so he asked of another foreign herb that would suppress the will to eat. He gave Julius a gold falcon to purchase it, a high sum for any herb or root Peregrine thought. He was sent away again and told never to return, so Peregrine sent a lad instead, who easily got a root, and was told it came from Ethelly.   Peregrine mixed the two components along with tortoise leaf which he was sure was part of the Mist. The residue when he boiled it down was similar to the poison. He paid Julius again to retrieve more from Jack Dobbins, and upon studying the odd poison more he focused his craft upon it. Praying to Lupretia, and tapping into his own energy that channels the gifts of blood magic.   He had neglected these talents for decades, and as his ears began to ring in pain, he discovered that whoever combined the components tapped into craft itself to bind it to acheive it's true purpose. A slow death that was nearly impossible to reverse unless you were nearly as skilled as him, a Priest of the Nine.   He was beginning to plan a way to have an audience with Lucius Vanderlay, to see just how much this man knew about this evil. His plans were altered the night Eivar Farnesse was murdered in the Butcher's Wail.   When he followed his gut instinct and decided to see what the carnage the rabble were discussing. He was alarmed at the brutality he witnessed, and upon looking at the dying Eivar, his attention was diverted into concealing the man's secret.   It was him who secretly stole Eivar's corpse from the morgue. He nearly killed himself trying to use his craft to decipher from the last's mans thoughts before he passed into Lupretia's grace. He only saw a grave, and a face with a name as he asked the fading Eivar. The name of Lucius Vanderlay.   He had Camille make it urgent to have Julius find them armed men to escort them to Lonoke, no matter the cost he told her before he succumbed to the overuse of his gifts. When he finally recovered the morning upon the cog outside the village of Venton. Peregrine discovered even more mystery when meeting Harwin and Edmund Parsons.   He felt something odd in their presence, but his mission to Lonoke was more urgent than following what his instinct was telling him. Peregrine decided to relieve the group after the climb to Faust, he felt it was a folly to have these young lads attached to him. He was planning to hire the Faust constables to escort them to Lonoke with a merchant convoy.   His plan was changed when the Yellow Ravens attacked him in the Oriole. He threw a powder into the attackers eyes, never seeing Edmund behind them. The dreaded powder killed the men, and blinded Edmund. He was beyond words that the lad survived, but even more bewildered when he shown signs of recovering his sight.
