Aerie

Aerie is a series of islands in the sky. Formed of magic and technology they maintain a constant altitude and remain aloft through the use of magical antigravity stones with a powerful engine to keep it aloft in emergencies. Aerie is also capable of landing on water and remaining afloat due to the water crystals embedded in both the islands and the buildings. Aerie is restricted to airspace over water.
  Buildings on the Aerie are connected via sky bridges which are enclosed with barriers to keep the occupants protected. The flooring was originally intended to be clear; however, the generally adverse psychological reactions to the sight changed the plan and now most are opaque. There are still transparent bridges for the thrill seekers and visitors who want to test their courage.
  Due to the heights that the Aerie can reach, the islands themselves also have a protective dome which while visibly transparent, filters out harmful radiation. Due to these barriers, the buildings of the Aerie are no taller than five stories.
  There is no landing strip for planes, so one must reach the Aerie by magical means or by one's own power. That said, the altitude is great enough that specialized equipment is necessary for any hoping to arrive on the island using their own wings. Permission must be granted and safety protocols must be followed. Most just teleport.
  Those who choose to live in the Aerie tend to be scientists doing high altitude experiments. There are several research universities located on the islands, as well as a few corporations who are testing near-space magic and technologies. There is also one aerospace company hoping to use one of the islands as a space bridge. There are also a number of hospitals who treat patients who have need of reduced gravity.
