Thorne Siblings

Annika, Ciprian, Laurentia, and Ligia

What does one do when you wake one day to find out you're squatters on the property of sleeping legends?

A Price to be Paid

When family is the singular guiding light in your life, is there any evil you wouldn't embrace to save them from tragedy? This is the question that Nicodemius Thorne had to wrestle with as he watched his wife and four children wither before his eyes. Thorne was a member of the old College of Magic, and he spent his life mastering and teaching the arts of Enchantment. He was also an esteemed member of Balmoral's nobility who maintained a small barony east of Carda's border. By all accounts, Thorne was a good man who walked the path of peace even when peace was as painful a path as war.   During the war with The Autumn Queen, Nicodemus was an ever-present voice calling for a cease-fire and a means forward. He allowed escaping gnomish refugees to pass through his land, but refused to let Tairos' defenders launch assaults into the Amberholt from within his barony. Baron Thorne was an advocate for calm until it became impossible to continue. Tairos' defenders showed him clear evidence of the existential threat the Queen posed, and reluctantly, he surrendered his neutrality in favor of joint survival. The Queen never expected to see a forced march from the Thorne borders, so they were mainly left undefended. This is what allowed Tairos' remaining heroes to strike the final blow and spare the land a bitter execution. This decision would have dire consequences for Nicodemus and his entire family.   Scattering members of the Shadow Court fled to whatever dark corners of the continent they could seek out, and one of those members, Tuathla, cast her darkness upon the Thorne Barony. She held rank within the Shadow Court as its Cipher of Miracles, a figure known for expertise in old fae magic. She set her fiendish pets upon his people to rip and tear, spilling as much blood as possible. In the end, Thorne would find her and kill her, but it changed nothing. The people of his barony were slaughtered and with Tuathla's dying breath she laid a dreadful curse upon Nicodemus' family. They would wither away, both body and mind, until their lips drink blood from the heart of a Lord of the Shadow Court. Tuathla's curse seemed unbreakable, the Shadow Court was believed destroyed by most of Tairos and with The Queen's Rebuke unfolding across the land, using magic to find them was nearly impossible.   Nicodemus burned through Manacite experimenting with means of breaking the curse or stymying the progress of the disease. All his efforts were in vain. Instead, he turned to treating the symptoms. After exhausting countless efforts, the only option left to him was to preserve their physical bodies while seeking ways to heal their minds. He chose Vampirism, kidnapping a vampire from the freezing expanses of Frostmere's territory and harvesting their blood. He tweaked and experimented upon the loathsome creature, attempting to perfect the Undead disease, specifically its healing ability and metabolism. He hoped to make their brand of vampirism capable of curing the mental wasting that they suffered from. And, he hoped to slow their metabolism and thus tamp down the thirst for blood they would suffer from. All he managed to do was create an enhanced physical healing ability and make a minor dent in their blood cravings. Seeing no other choice, he transformed his family into vampires.   This act bought time, but the cost was paid in tragedy. Many of the few survivors of his estate became prey for his family, and unwilling to let his choice cost good people their lives, he animated any who became meals for his family as simpler undead. His hope, steeped in delusion, was to find cures for these servants in time, too. His family was lingering longer and longer in their bouts of frenzied madness, and only blood could bring them moments of lucidity. In one of those moments, his wife, Lucretia, realized she needed to end this and attempted to burn down the castle and kill her family. In the end, Nicodemus stopped her, and rather than see his brand of reason, she cast herself out into the sunlight to embrace final death.   Crushed by her loss, Nicodemus came to realize that the solution wouldn't be found here in his crumbling barony. He used his flawless knowledge of Enchantment and the last of his manacite reserves to lay a spell over his entire estate, placing his children in an eternal slumber and the numerous other undead into a dream-like state that would confine them to the property. He would leave the estate in search of a curse. Whatever happened to Nicodemus is unknown, but he never returned to the castle.   His spell would remain active, recasting itself continuously over the centuries. It was controlled by a special hourglass that required a special ring and a command phrase to activate. Nicodemus entrusted one of the undead to carry out this duty in his absence, and the hollow-minded automaton did so.

Debts Ignored

Then came Ridley's Prospect and with it the grave robbers that Lupin Ridley attracted. A group of those grave robbers managed to penetrate the castle, stave off its slumbering effects, slay the undead manning the hourglass, and pry the control jewels out. One of them found a sleeping Ciprian and prepared to stake him when he woke. In a starved and feral state, he slew most of the grave robbers and chased the others into the wilderness. He hunted them down, fed on them, and prowled the woods for months on end, eating beasts and hiding from the sun. He wandered aimlessly and crossed into Carda's old territory. He's unsure of what transpired there exactly, but one day he woke from his frenzy, fully lucid and free from the mental withering. Tuathla's curse was broken. He had no interest in investigating how this happened; he instead rushed back home to see if his family was restored and if his father had returned. Neither was the case. His sisters still slept in their sarcophagi, dead still stumbled about the property, and there was no sign of his father. The only change at all was the lights. Lights across the lake. Someone was building a settlement where their barony once stood.   Ciprian found Ridley's Prospect. It was early in its construction, but even then, it was an exciting place full of new faces, new handsome faces worth indulging in... and feeding on. He never killed anyone he considered innocent. He brought several to Thorne Castle and fed them to his sleeping sisters, helping to keep them fed and healthy while they slept. He also learned that he would have to be the one to maintain the sleeping spell on the property. In his absence, while feral in the woods and carousing in the prospect, the sleeping spell was crumbling, damaged beyond repair. It would require nightly maintenance lest its effectiveness rapidly fade.   He would do his best over the coming months to keep the spell active (missing several days while in hedonistic pursuit in the Prospect) and keep his sisters fed, hoping that maybe blood would heal their minds or at least keep their bodies in good health. While at home, he tidies up, dusts the shambling undead and cleans their uniforms, tends to the castle estate, and deals with any threats that might invade the grounds. While in the Prospect, he masquerades as a high-priced harlot in the Silver Tail Saloon, sating all his urges while seeking out some of the settlement's worst to feed to his sisters.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

All of the siblings were incredibly healthy before the fae curse. Its effects wracked their bodies in constant crippling pain, often leaving them bedridden. It also muddled their memories and clouded their thoughts. When Nicodemus gave them the gift of undeath, it healed them back to perfect health while locking them into permanent living death. Now, this is the state they will remain in until final death. Any damage their bodies receive or changes made to their form are quickly reverted with a night's rest and ample blood.

Body Features

All the siblings share their mother's pale blonde hair. And, thanks to their vampiric nature, they all share pale flesh and eyes that flicker unnaturally in the dark

Physical quirks

The twins have a habit of not being able to hold still. This wasn't the case during life, but thanks to the wasting curse and long sleep they now fidget frequently. They also seem to pay attention to things others can't see, giggling or talking with unseen forces.

Special abilities

The transformation into undeath impacted their sorcerous nature in many strange and unpredictable ways. All of them have the Shadow Magic origin thanks to their connection to Necromancy but the twins seem to have the strongest tether to the Ethereal Plane, making their magic more potent than the others. Ciprian has had time to hone his talents differently, being an Arcane Trickster. Annika's vampiric nature is the most expressed. During bouts of stress, anger, or fear she may frenzy. In this state she is very similar to a barbarian that walks the path of the wildheart.

Apparel & Accessories

They all prefer their somewhat risque attire that was rather in fashion among the youth of the time. They also all possess rings given to them by their father to grant them immunity to the sleeping spell

Specialized Equipment

Nicodemus crafted rings that he left for his children so that, should they need it, they would be immune to the pacifying power of his sleeping spell. The lesser undead would always need to be kept in check, but he envisioned a time when the four children would require such devices rather than have to be forced to sleep. These rings also allow the user to interact with the hourglass relic that controls the spell. Finally, the rings have some protective elements that their father wove into them as well. Nicodemus foresaw that hunters may come for his children before he could cure them, and wanted them to have every possible advantage.

Mental characteristics

Sexuality

All of the Thorne siblings have their vampirism-born urges. Sexuality and the need to feed are often tied together for vampires and the Thornes are not immune to this. They do, however, handle it differently. Annika uses her focus on responsibility and family to anchor her. The twins' minds are more damaged and unable to latch onto any one thing for long, drifting quickly to other etheric ideas. Sex is urgent in the moment for them, but a quickly fleeting urge to be replaced by another distraction. Cirprian sees no reason to resist temptation nor does he ever attempt to.

Education

They received the finest education available to a member of Balmoran nobility. Additionally, thanks to their father's upbringing, they have also been taught a great deal about the history of magic

Failures & Embarrassments

The twins are highly embarrassed by their confused state of mind. They used to be so sharp-witted and well-studied. Now they often drift off into fancy or lose themselves to visions sent from the other side. They're both very aware of how Annika reacts as well, seeing her younger sisters as delicate and deminished. Ciprian teases them for it often, but he doesn't shy away from their new nature nor treat them delicately. This is something both Laurentia and Ligia appreciate.

Mental Trauma

The Thorne siblings suffer from the effects of the curse as well, the trauma of undeath, and the fugue of Nicodemus' sleeping spell. All of this combines into a unique form of mental damage that only they can understand. Ciprian would be the least impacted, while the twins seem to carry the deepest scars.

Morality & Philosophy

While all of their morality varies slightly, there are values they each hold true. First, magic. Each of them possesses some magical acumen thanks to their parents' magical heritage and their strange transition into undeath. They're dedicated to perfecting it, even without a teacher. They all want to explore their new nature, including their sorcerous powers, together. Second, killing. The siblings have fought hard against their urges to drink blood and kill, and each recognizes the wrongness of the action, even though all of them have crossed the line multiple times. For Annika, this rule is firm and universally negative when misstepped. For the twins, their damaged minds make it difficult not to let playful taunting, trickery, and feeding go too far. They give their full effort to the task of not killing, but the depth of that effort varies based on their current stability. For Ciprian, who has lived the longest in the real world and feels like a reluctant caretaker, he sees the necessity of selective killing.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Annika wants to protect her siblings and keep their unraveling nature in check. She's also afraid that she might be the only one strong enough to do what has to be done and destroy all of them. The twins are motivated by curiosity and discovery. They are able to see through the veil and into the Ethereal Plane, often communicating with things dwelling there. Sometimes they're given valuable information to act on, other times they receive nothing more than gibberish. Ciprian is a reluctant caretaker. In life, he was a petulant young man who loathed responsibility. Now, in undeath, he's the lone healed mind that must tend to his damaged sisters.

Savvies & Ineptitudes

Annika was a singer starting to come into her own. She hadn't produced anything truly remarkable yet, but she was on the verge of true talent before her death. The twins have some aptitude at painting abstract works. Nicodemus would say Ciprian's talent was overindulging in Alcohol, but his son has a secret talent for writing. He keeps all his thoughts, poems, and feelings in a well-hidden journal.

Likes & Dislikes

Annika

Likes - the color red, lavish dinner parties, spending time with her siblings, even when Ciprian is being a brooding tart or her sisters are lost in the depths of the ethereal
Dislikes - Her sarcophagus, the dark, and being alone with her thoughts -they often bring her back to the conclusion that they're never going to heal and that death is the only answer

Laurentia

Likes - Spiders, the moon, comparing visions with Ligia, talking to the undead in the castle, big loud parties, and feeling mud between her toes
Dislikes - Certain spiders, when Ciprian teases, the weird noise spoons make when people are scraping the last bit of something out of the bowl

Ligia

Likes- Also spiders, comparing visions with Ligia, scaring Ciprian and Annika, big loud parties, swimming in the lake, and weird tiny bottles
Dislikes- certain spiders, the color yellow, open doors, when Annika snaps them out of a vivid vision because she's scared of something they're saying

Ciprian

Likes- Drinking Alcohol, carousing with attractive men, a really good sharp knife, stylish black or red clothing, seeing his sisters happy (though he'd never admit it to them)
Dislikes- Responsibility, tacky decor, the Pickle Priest, seeing his sisters sad or in pain

Vices & Personality flaws

All of them are ashamed of how vampirism drives them to overindulge and crave blood

Hygiene

The Thorne Siblings have many baths in their estate and a seemingly endless collection of perfumes

Representation & Legacy

Little of the Thorne legacy is remembered outside of a few books on the history of the College of Magic and the study of Enchantment

Social

Reign

Any power recognizing the borders of the Thorne Barony is long dead

Religious Views

The Thornes would have attended the Kreastos in Balmoral and prayed to Sandor The Guardian of Tairos along with the rest of the pantheon of New Gods. They were far from zealous in their practice of faith, though, seeing much of the requirements of faith as cultural traditions rather than worship. Now, post-Rebuke, they assume the gods are dead, like much of the old ways

Social Aptitude

Ciprian is the most adapted to social interaction. Prior to their transformation, they were all social paragons, but now their minds are addled and their urges ever-constant. Annika fears social interaction because of the danger it could bring upon her siblings. She'd rather they sequester themselves away. The twins crave social interaction even though they're unfamiliar with social etiquette now. Everything seems like so much fun to them.

Hobbies & Pets

They would love to have a dog.
