The most beautiful words ever uttered in Tairos belong to the people who killed it
What Tairos knows as the language spoken by the fae is, in truth, just one of dozens of languages formerly spoken on
The Autumn Queen homeworld of Arcadia. This was the language of the ruling classes, the fae nobility, and acted similarly to
The Common Tongue here in Tairos. It was a unifying language that allowed dozens of different races and hundreds of unique ethnicities to communicate effectively with one another.
Each of the
Primary Fae Races had languages all their own as well, but they adapted this tongue into daily use by order of their masters, the Queen and her
Shadow Court. Unlike how Balmoran became the common language of Tairos for convenience, Arcadian became the official language of the fae by way of noble peerage and threat of force. In Tairos, not knowing the common tongue is far from rare. Many regions, such as
Frostmere and
Talbot, had regional languages of their own and preferred their use. For the fae, not knowing Arcadian would be seen as a sign of defiance or rebellion.
The language itself, like all things with the fae, had an aura magic and mystery to it. The very words themselves seemed to be charged with power and able to invoke miracle or disaster alike. It was the language favored by all of the fae's bards. Outside of the fae, who by decree quickly picked up the common tongue of Tairos once they arrived here, Arcadian was rarely used outside their own people. The only exception would have been
Talboti artists and
bards.
Today, the language is largely lost. If any fae survive, surely their language does too, but for the common Tairosian this language hasn't been spoken in three centuries. Fae-worshipping cults who believe the Autumn Queen was a kind of promised savior often attempt to resurrect the language. Their efforts are done with a limited understanding and incomplete dictionary, leading to what noble fae would have deemed gutteral baby-talk.
