The winter fuff sheds during spring, usually unnoticably while they wash their bodies.
Additional Information
Facial characteristics
A pair of long, feathery antennae crown their heads, granting them exceptional sensitivity to their surroundings. These allow Mothlings to sense changes in air currents, vibrations, and even faint magical energies, compensating for their poor eyesight.
Mothling eyes are on the larger side and adapted for dim light, granting them darkvision. However, their sensitivity to sunlight results in sunlight sensitivity, hindering their vision and perception in direct daylight.
Most Mothlings have small, delicate mouths suited for a vegetarian diet of fruits, nectar, and plants. However, the Optera subspecies have fangs and an omnivorous diet, reflecting their unique heritage.
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
Most mothlings have either darkvision or even blindvision, based on their traits and heritage. They are however quite sensitive to light, and tend to have a disadvantage on perception in bright daylight outside.
Civilization and Culture
Common Myths and Legends
The Mothlings are a race intricately tied to the wild magic of Tagaz, particularly the untamed Feywild-infused Western Tagaz.
According to their legends, they were once ordinary moth-like creatures drawn to the glow of the sun. The sun goddess took notice of them, and brimming with untamed magic, transformed the moths into sentient beings. The first Mothlings were wanderers, gifted with intelligence and dexterity, yet still tethered to their insect origins. This origin story has made the Mothlings deeply reverent of the sun and their own sun goddess.
Mothlings have an additional set of arms, giving them four in total. The second pair is fully functional, ideal for multitasking or intricate tasks like crafting, engineering, or alchemy.
Their legs are digitigrade, resembling those of insects or small mammals. This structure enhances their agility, allowing them to move quickly and leap great distances.
Mothlings have soft, slightly chitinous skin, offering minor natural protection. Many subspecies, particularly the Maple, have patches of fur or fluff on their wings and bodies, providing warmth and comfort in colder environments.
Mothlings possess downward-pointing wings that vary in shape, size, and texture depending on their subspecies. Though not capable of sustained flight, these wings allow for short bursts of gliding or leaping, granting them enhanced mobility in both combat and exploration.
Subspecies Wing Variations:
Atlas: Vibrant, butterfly-like wings with intricate patterns.
Maple: Fuzzy, soft wings that provide insulation in colder climates.
Sphinx: Sleek, muted wings designed for speed and maneuverability.
Scarab: Compact, beetle-like wings, sometimes protected by a shell-like covering.
Optera: Dragonfly-like wings with transparent, shimmering membranes.
