Ulfgardian Burial Mounds
The burial mounds of ancient Ulfgard have long served as the final resting places of the ancient people of these wild lands. While Ulfgard has become more settled in the centuries since, these mounds still stand as a reminder of their past, as well as living monuments to the history of the land.
Purpose / Function
The Ulfgardian burial mounds were constructed to serve as the final resting places of the people of old Ulfgard.
Alterations
The earliest burial mounds were dug into the sides of hills, while later ones were constructed from stone blocks, often covered with dirt to blend into the surrounding landscape.
Architecture
Ulfgardian burial mounds consist of a hollowed out room containing a bed of stones/logs, and whatever objects of significance the deceased had been laid to rest with.
History
It's believed that the earliest burial mounds were created to provide the ancient people of Ulfgard with the intention of sparing arable land that could be used for farming in these untamed lands from being used for burial. Originally being carved into the surrounding hills, later mounds would be constructed from stone with dirt piled over them to create artificial hills, and the practice of laying down objects of worth to the deceased within the mounds alongside their former owners began to take root as well (the mounds of kings and heroes are said to contain an especially impressive hoard of treasures associatted with them).
