The Fae Feast

When it comes to the Fae, nearly every interaction, no matter how small, carries great risk to Mortals, and few things are as emblematic of this than the Fae Feast. While being offered food is considered an act of benevolence in most circumstances, such an offer from the Fae often brings with it the potential for great misfortune.

Summary

While the exact details of the stories tied to the Fae Feast vary, the genaral gist remains the same: Whether they stumble upon it by accident, or are purposely brought there by one of the participants, the mortal finds themselves in the midst of a large feast being attended by a number of different Fae beings, usually presided over by at least one of the High Fae, and filled with food and drink that's routinely described as being "richer, sweeter, and more flavourful than anything mortal hands could produce" (in some stories, a few meals that the participant is particularly fond of might be a part of the spread, to further entice them). Upon their arrival, the Fae will insistently try to coerce their new "guest" into participating in the feast with them, and if they refuse long enough, the Fae might become more forceful in their efforts (as their strange views of hospitality demand that anyone that becomes involved in one of their gatherings, even if unintentionally, must participate in its proceedings whether they like it or not). Usually, the "guest" manages to escape, either through their own efforts or through outside help, though their are stories where the participant isn't quite so fortunate.

Historical Basis

Many of the oldest stories tied to the Fae Feast came from supposed first-hand accounts being passed down, and seeing as how the areas these stories were first told in were known for frequent encounters with the Fae, they were accepted as fact by the locals.

Spread

Stories of the Fae Feast originated among the villages and towns near the Elderwood (which is known for its strong connection to the Fae Realm), and has since spread throughout the kingdoms of Imera and Ulfgard.

Variations & Mutation

While partaking of the Fae Feast invariably brings misfortune, the exact form this misfortune takes varies between tellings. In some stories, eating the food will place the victim under a spell that enslaves them to the Fae, or turns them into one of them. In other tellings, eating the food will kill the victim outright. And according to yet other tales, consuming the feast doesn't actually do anything, but the food proves to be so immensely delicious, they consumer refuses to eat anything else, as it "just can't compare".

Cultural Reception

Stories of the Fae Feast and those who've fallen victim to it are one of many cautionary tales told about dealing with the Fae, and is often taken as a warning against accepting offers from suspicious individuals, no matter how tempting they might seem.

In Literature

Stories of the Fae Feast feature frequently in any form of literature tied to the folklore of Imera and Ulfgard, as well as any stories of the Fae in general.

In Art

One of the famous works of art tied to the these stories is the aptly named painting The Feast of the Fae by Arendt Kerrane, which depicts a scene of an unfortunate traveller being forced to participate in the titular feast by a group of Fae.
