Prism Drake
The Fae Realm is home to a number of bizarre creatures unlike any seen in the Mortal Realm, including their own variety of Dragons. One such species of dragonkin is the Prism Drake, a small, insectile dragon known for their bright colouration and glasslike wings. Though not sighted often in either the Fae or Mortal Realms, these draconic beasts remain an impressive sight.
Basic Information
Anatomy
In their juvenile form, Prism Drakes have a small, slightly pudgy body with six legs and a long tail. When they've matured, they gain a body similar to other Dragons, with four legs, a long, sinewy tail, a pair of butterfly-like wings with a glassy texture, and a head with a pair of slender, backwards-facing horns and four glowing eyes.
Genetics and Reproduction
Prism Drakes are an egg laying species.
Growth Rate & Stages
Juvenile Prism Drakes hatch from their eggs as small "grubs", where they will begin consuming Aether through whatever means are available to them. After about five years, the Prism Drake will seek out a safe place out of reach of most predators, where it will then proceed to hang by its tail from whatever ledge can support it and form a cocoon a hard, glass-like substance around itself (it's observed that these cocoons emit a soft glow from within until its hatching). After a year of pupating, the now mature Prism Drake will break out of its cocoon. If they've managed to consume an especially large amount of Aether in their lifetime, a mature Prism Drake might cocoon itself again, where it will emerge 10 years later as an even larger, more powerful specimen.
Ecology and Habitats
Prism Drakes are most comfortable within the Fae Realm, though they can also be found in places with high levels of illusion-aspected Aether.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Prism Drakes are omnivorous, though they seem to have a preference for fruits, berries, and insects. They can also consume Aether, which they use to fuel their growth.
Behaviour
Prism Drakes, like many Fae creatures, are naturally curios creatures, who would follow and study any foreign entities they encounter, provided they don't pose any threat or challenge.
Additional Information
Domestication
Some members of the High Fae Courts have been known to keep Prism Drakes as pets and mounts.
Facial characteristics
Prism Drakes have sharp, pointed features, a pair of straight, backwards facing horns, and four glowing eyes.
Geographic Origin and Distribution
Prism Drakes can be found all over the Fae Realm, as well as some places in the Mortal Realm where the two realms intersect.
Average Intelligence
Prism Drakes are highly intelligent, with the oldest having the ability to speak.
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
Prism Drakes are capable of sensing Aether in an area, which they use for navigating and hunting. They also possess a number of illusion based abilities, including camouflage and the ability to emit bursts of light to stun or mesmerise.
Lifespan
400 years
Average Height
An adult Prism Drake can grow to be about the size of a horse, while the rare Elder Prism Drake can grow to be as big as a house.
Average Physique
Mature Prism Drakes have long, slender bodies.
Body Tint, Colouring and Marking
Prism Drakes have glassy scales covering their bodies, with the exception of their underside, which is typically light green in colouration. These scales are usually solid black, but can change colour at will. The wings of the Prism Drakes resemble butterfly wings made from pieces of colourful glass, akin to stained glass, and their eyes are a solid, glowing pale green.
