Ixlotl

The Ixlotl are a subgroup of Xothgi native to the Keahi archipelago in south-eastern Vraelia, as well as the nearby coastline. Compared to their mainland cousins, the Ixlotl have become well-known for their aquatic culture, particularly their skill as sailors and their ability to explore the depths surrounding their island homes.

Culture

Culture and cultural heritage

The culture of the Ixlotl is heavily influenced by their island habitats, best seen in the deep respect they show for the land they call home. Volcanoes are held as sacred landmarks both for their destructive potential and the fertile soil they provide, and the surrounding ocean waters are viewed as the lifeblood of their civilisation for food, resources, and trade.

Most notably, water is given a particular cultural significance among the Ixlotl. Access to clean freshwater is vital for both sustenance and a healthy spawning, and many aspects of life among the Ixlotl revolve around water, including sailing for trade and transportation, diving for food and resources, and many significant celebrations and milestones taking place around or involving water.

Shared customary codes and values

Like all Xothgi, the Ixlotl have a deep veneration for the flow of Aether in the world, doing whatever they can to minimize their interference with it. Additionally, the Ixlotl share the veneration for their ancesty held by all Xothgi, both their direct ancestors and the shared ancestry of their fellow "Scalekin" (SythssyaDrakai, and Kobolds).

Average technological level

The Ixlotl are able to build ships capable of sailing through open ocean, as well as large stone structures.

Common Dress code

Ixlotl clothing is made to be light and easy to move in, and is extremely colourful.

Art & Architecture

Ixlotl buildings are commonly made from wood, bamboo, and thatch, consist of a single large room, and are designed to be airy. More significant structures, such as temples, are constructed from stone, though still with the same airy design in mind. Their art takes the form of woodcarvings, wood/stone sculptures, and weavings, all using bright colours. Additionally, the Ixlotl are known to apply markings to their bodies using dyes that complement their natural scale colours (ussually to commemorate significant events/traits).

Foods & Cuisine

Ixlotl cuisine consists of various fruits, whatever vegetables can be grown on the islands, and meat (typically fish or pork).

Funerary and Memorial customs

Ixlotl funerals are more lively than those of most other peoples, consisting of singing, dancing, sharing stories about the deceaseds life, and providing gifts to help support the family of the deceased, with ceremonies often lasting multiple days. Burial grounds are typically located in places overlooking the nearby ocean.

Ideals

Beauty Ideals

Gender Ideals

Among the Ixlotl, females are expected to stick close to and tend to their homes/settlements, while the males are more likely to venture further away from home.

Courtship Ideals

It commonly falls on the male to court their mate, typically through the presentation of a gift that demonstrates their ability to provide for them both.

Relationship Ideals

Ixlotl are typically monogamous, with both parties being expected to contribute equally to the relationship.
