Esslein Sourdough

Esslin Sourdough is a bread originating from, and named for, the town of Esslein within the kingdom of Athenor, and a highly popular staple of Athenoran cuisine. Known for its slightly sour flavour, this bread remains a highly popular meal among the people of Athenor, either on its own or alongside other meals.

Manufacturing process

  1. Stir together flour and salt, then let sit for 10 minutes.
  2. Add water, then knead.
  3. Leave out for a day to rise.
  4. Place in oven and bake.

History

It's commonly held that the first instance of this bread originated from the small town of Esslein, a fact that the town continues to uphold as a point of pride. The exact circumstances of its creation, however, vary from time to time, with some saying that it was the result of leaving the dough out longer than intended, while others claim that it was the result of risidual yeast from previous batches clung to the trough used in previous batches getting into the dough. Regardless, this sourdough quickly became popular among the common citizenry, eventually spreading to other towns and cities throughout Athenor.

Significance

Esslein sourdough is considered to be one of the great staple foods of the Athenoran people, being served alongside many of their meals or eaten on its own. The creation of this bread has also lead to the creation of a number of new recipes, with the "bread bowl" being one of the most popular.
