Ruston, Washington

A diminutive township nestled inside the northern end of Tacoma, Ruston is a town full of affluent waterfront property and recent key point of urban development, or such is the concept anyways.   While it's a mundane piece of the Tacoma area and a point of avoidance for many supernaturals, it has fallen into keen interest for the Kindred, especially it's new leader Arnd Weiss, who sees the money that can be milked, the areas that can be improved, and the resources available once he cracks the code on the Project Firstlight stores that exist there.

History

Since this town is barely bigger than 1/4th of a Square Mile, this won't take too long. Around 1890 William R. Rust took over a local smeltery and created a Smelter District, which in 1906 was declared the city of Ruston named after him. This smelting company would be acquired by the American Smelting and Refining Company aka ASARCO and began to smelt copper.   The smelting company and the 571 foot tall smokestack, which was a landmark in and of itself, would remain until 1993 causing an untold amount of arsenic pollution into the air and soil of Tacoma, with the slag being dumped into Commencement Bay to asssit in land expansion. After the demolition in 1993, the next 13 years would be spend restoring the environment and decontaminating the soil of the area, but there are still effects to this day. After this, it became a quiet and desirable waterfront city, and propety values skyrocketed.   The cost and value of the area only further increased with the formation of Point Ruston, a luxury "urban village" project that was built over the land of the old smeltery that began around 2013. Many high-cost condos, apartments, and luxury businesses opened on the land, as well as other businesses, a walking path, a water fountain play area, and a connecting bridge to the nearby Point Defiance Park and the ferry terminal that is present there. While the project has been rife with gentrification and corrupt direction and funding, the people of Tacoma see it decently favorably.

Supernatural History

For The Awakened and Garou of the area, the small city has been a no-go area. The strange mystic Weakness that makes it harder to do any kind of Magic/k is strongest in that area than anywhere else in Northern Tacoma, and within the spiritual realm of the Umbra that the Garou traverse the Smokestack and it's pollution still exist as an artifact of the Wyrm that has so far failed to have been toppled.   For Kindred, the city has only become important during the Sabbat Invasion to the present. When the cornerstones were laid for the Cleansing Nights, a secret bomb shelter underneath what is now the Silver Cloud Hotel became the base of operations for Project: FIRSTLIGHT, the governmant arm of The Second Inquisition. While they were expertly manuevered and directed by the Kindred, they were the first to go after the Sabbat were destroyed. The foolish considered the job done, and the wise were mentally manipulated or exterminated, leaving behind a full cache locked behind state-of-the-art encryption.   Now, Arnd Weiss has taken over the vampiric rule of the township, finding the aged and affluent to be kin of his and wishing to milk the area for all it's worth, including the resources beneath his feet. Surprisingly, he's actually sealed up a lot of the money corruption that marred the development project of Point Ruston, since he may be a blood sucker, but he's an honest man in terms of finance and business.

Demographics

Point Ruston's population is primarily White, well-off, and over 30 years old. While there's variation among the population the small territory is mostly waterfront homes and long-term residents.   Among Supernaturals, very few Mages or Garou want to go near there, as it's an epicenter for both the mystical Weakness and for dark spirits that slumber in the Umbra, remnants of the pollution of the past. For Kindred it hasn't  historically been popular, being a very sunny part of town and the former headquarters of The Second Inquisition, but after the Cleansing Nights it's become the domain of Baron Arnd Weiss with an affluent few setting up their havens nearby.   A few aquatic Fae like to swim in the waters connected to Point Ruston, but they prefer to enter and exit on beaches that exist firmly within Tacoma territory instead.

Government

For Kine the small township is served by a Mayor and five elected council members. For Kindred, the Anarch Baron Arnd Weiss has recently taken control over the domain of Ruston. While it's too small to dice up into overseen neighborhoods, Arnd's personal aides keep an eye out. Just down the way also exists Olde Town Tacoma, a domain of Tacoma watched over by Micol Milton, leader of the local Thinbloods whom has a good relationship with Arnd.

Industries

Ruston is mostly a residential town, being a place for fancy homes with waterfront views, but there are a handful of small businesses and Point Ruston has had many come into it's waiting spaces since it's inception.

Geography

Being on the edge of the Tacoma landmass, Ruston has a steep declining hill down to the waterfront.

Fun Fact

The effects of the ASARCO smokestack are felt far beyond Ruston itself, as citizens in Downtown Tacoma who wish to make a garden are urged to buy elevated garden plots to use, as the natural soil is still at risk of being permeated with Arsenic from the factory.
