Ta Geta ~~ The Gate Of Kanda

At the mouth of Eira Kandia there is a gap of only about five miles. That gap is straddled by a city known as Ta Geta; a centuries old stronghold founded by much earlier Kandaria to block the way from outside invaders and control trade in and out of the sea! At first this was just a simple pair of military posts but soon enough gradual updating and the increase of military personnel and ships brought the attention of civilians looking for the safety of a well defended community. Working and producing for these military institutions, the people talked and gradually refugees from all around came to both of these posts. With them came continued commerce. Needing to protect this new, bountiful commerce, the Empire sent even more military force to protect the economic infrastructure and culture of international trade.   After centuries of repeating waves of refugee workers coming for military protection, commerce increasing to meet their demands and military increasing to guard this commerce the city itself ended up straddling the strait completely. It was no longer a pair of simple military outposts but a gigantic, hundred thousand strong fortress city with successive series of walls extending out from the central nexus based around the tiny strait; so small that successive protective chains are able to be lain out and pulled tight to stop ships, whether they be trading or attacking.   Because of the melting pot affect, despite a strong Kandia Administrative Culture, it is an extremely spiritually and domestically free area; consisting of folks of all walks of life, belief systems and eastern parts of the known world!

Government

While technically within Kandia borders, Ta Geta is only nominally Kandia in culture; instead being a melting pot of various natives, travelers, fortune seekers and destitute seeking a better life. Largely run by native rulers, there is always a governor watching over things and ensuring that Kanda is the one that gets the best deals in any transaction. However, because of centuries of bountiful trade and tax agreements, the authorities of Ta Geta are actually quite in favor of the Kanda Bureaucratic System; much as the paperwork load is extremely heavy.
Suitably, for many generations, the local king and leaders under him have long committed to the slow but steady transformation into True Kandia territory, at least administratively. All government documents are written in Kandia script, royal proclamations given in Kandia tongue.

Defences

Ta Geta has been an active military post for the entirety of its existence. It has many towers, a small Island and great system of chains that cross the bay that can be pulled taught to trap incoming fleets in killing pockets. Moreover, it is regularly sailed by warships that keep The Gate Of Kanda well protected and traffic the trade coming in from The Stopping Gap. On Average Ta Geta has 8 Legions serving, though only half of that number actively plies the strait. The rest guard the city and assist in affairs in the surrounding countryside. Strong engines of war sit atop every major tower and walls around the settlement stand no less than 60 feet tall.

Industry & Trade

While Ta Geta has an excellent Fishing economy the money comes from its position as Gate to the Kanda Sea; Eira Kandia. Through the five mile straight all boats are stopped and tariffed; everything from incense and silver from The Stopping Gap to hardwoods and exotic slaves from The Spirit Isles. No matter what goes through Ta Geta, the inhabitants get a share of it. This has made Ta Geta rich throughout the centuries and ensures it stands as one of the largest and richest cities in all of Kanda. Because of their incredibly thrifty nature, Ta Geta is responsible for tracking all of the imports into Kanda from beyond the strait and the treasurers of the city work very hard to ensure that not even a single gram of incense is ever left unrecorded!

Tourism

If there is anywhere in Kanda that receives consistent, year round tourism, it is Ta Geta!
Ta Geta, as a thriving trade capital of the Empire, has always been on the mind of enterprising go-getters and young business folk but also sits as a Major Holy Site for the Kandia Pantheonic System (One of the 25 Sites Of Highest Purity) and is visited by pilgrims seeking to better their spiritual understanding regularly.   The Straight by the same name is said to be a beautiful place with many lovely animals, wondrous views and delicious food said to be a fusion of all manner of cultures in this melting pot of money and language!
In being such a multicultural place for so many centuries, The Getaria tend to like diverse building styles and have been resistant to the rigid standards of  the Core, regarded as largely eccentric but EXTREMELY loyal subjects of The Empire who have never once failed to deliver upon their duties as the keepers of Commerse in the far East of the Empire's Borders.    Because PUBLIC Crime is very low in Ta Geta and the military presence so high, it is regarded as a safe place even for the elderly to enjoy the sights and tastes, sounds and overall experiences of this most interesting of places. Many sea birds fly about and tease at humans with all manner of raucous calls, Flukka hop and spin and do flips over the water, schools of fish jump right into the nets of the lesser boats and the sound of the waves calms the spirit and mind.
There one might sit on the ultra-fine, gently marbled black and white sands and rest their cares away, knowing that if something bad were to happen that they are in one of the safest places in the world. So long as one is peaceful and can pay, Ta Geta has no shortage of delightful experiences!

Natural Resources

The key exports from Ta Geta are fish products and salt, as the bounty of the sea is constant and well plied. However, other than that Ta Geta has a military past and its origins are in its value as a defensive system and crossing point.
