Punishments

Warning: All punishments listed may be increased due to repeated offenses, or the severity of the offense.  

Punishment for a crime can include one or more of the following, based on the nature of the crime, who or what the crime is committed against, and the criminal record of the convicted:

 
  • Death.
  • Exile (for a number of years or summers.)
  • Flogging (a set number of strokes. Exhaustion level based upon number of strokes (1 level per 25 strokes.))
  • Hard Labor (for a period of DTDs depending on the seriousness of the crime.)
  • Imprisonment (for a period of DTDs depending on the seriousness of the crime.)
  • Fine (payable to the city or appropriate parties; inability to pay the fine leads to imprisonment and/or hard labor.)
  • Edict (Forbidding the convicted from doing something; violation of an edict can result in imprisonment, hard labor, and/or a fine.)
  • Seizure (confiscation of items, property, structures, goods and the like, taken by the state and distributed as necessary based upon the lord
  • of the given realm.)
  • Dismemberment (permanent removal of limb, digit, appendage, or other body part.)
  • Branding (branded mark upon body part, often on chest, shoulder, hand, or forehead, indicating the branded as a criminal of the branded mark.)
  • Enslavement (Sold into slavery, and potentially force retirement.)
 

Crimes against Nobility and Government Officials

Treason

The act of attempting by overt acts to overthrow the emperor to which the offender owes allegiance or to kill or personally injure the emperor of the imperial family.
  • Typical Punishment(s): Seizure of all assets and death.
 

Spying or sabotage for a foreign power

The act of interference within the country to collect confidential information or to deliberately damage, destroy, or obstrusct for political or military advantage.
  • Typical Punishment(s): Seizure of all assets and death.
 

Murder of nobility or an official

The act of killing one of noble birth or of one who holds public office.
  • Typical Punishment(s): Seizure of property and death.
 

Impersonating royalty

The act of fraudulently personates a member of the imperial family, living or dead.
  • Typical Punishment(s): Death.
 

Assaulting or impersonating a nobility

The act of intentionally applying force to a person of noble birth or fraudulently personating a person of noble birth, living or dead.
  • Typical Punishment(s): Removal of offending limb or appendage.
 

Assaulting or impersonating an official

The act of intentionally applying force to a person holding public office or fraudulently personating a person of holding public office, living or dead.
  • Typical Punishment(s): Fines of 10,000-15,000gp and 15-30 DTDs within the stockades.
 

Blackmailing a member of nobility

The act of coercing a person of noble birth in order to receive a reward, monetary or otherwise.
  • Typical Punishment(s): Exile from the empire up to 5 years and flogging for 10-20 DTDs.
 

Blackmailing an official

The act of coercing a government official in order to receive a reward, monetary or otherwise.
  • Typical Punishment(s): Exile from the empire for 6-12 months and flogging for 5-10 DTDs.
 

Bribery or attempted bribery of an official or nobility

The act of offering or successful giving of ‘gifts’ to a public official or a person of noble birth in order to receive a desired outcome that would otherwise be illegal.
  • Typical Punishment(s): Seizure of property, and up to 200 DTDs spent in hard labor for the empire.
 

Using magic on nobility without their consent

The act of applying magic of any kind on a person of noble birth without their consent.
  • Typical Punishment(s): Fines of 2,500-5,000gp, with additional fines of 10,000-15,000gp for damages or public humiliation caused, along with up to 50-100 DTDs within the stockade or in forced labor.
 

Using magic on an official without their consent

The act of applying magic of any kind on a public official without their consent.
  • Typical Punishment(s): Fines of 1,500gp, with additional fines of 3000gp for damages or public humiliation caused, along with up to 30 DTDs within the stockade or in forced labor.
 

Forgery of an official document

The act of creating or altering a official document, symbol, sigil, or other articles, with false information
  • Typical Punishment(s): Branding of the body, 100 DTDs of hard labor, and on repeat offenses removal of limb or death.
 

Wrongful seizure or use of land

The act of seizing land of the empire and her people without authorization or command.
  • Typical Punishment(s): Fines of the cost of the lost revenue of the land, or the lands initial cost itself, up to 300 DTDs of hard labor.
 

Willful disobedience of a lawfully given edict or sentence

The act of willfully disobeying the lawfully given sentence of a public official or person of noble birth.
  • Typical Punishment(s): Fines of 1,000gp and a 30 DTDs within the stockades.
 

Slander of nobility

The act of slandering or otherwise speaking falsehoods of nobility that results in harm to their reputation.
  • Typical Punishment(s): Fines of 500gp and 10 DTDs imprisonment.
 

Sedition

The act of attempting to incite insurrection against the governing authority of a settlement, region, or the empire in its entirety.
  • Typical Punishment(s): Dismemberment of tongue, 50 DTDs within the stockades, and death in rare cases.
 

Crimes against Settlement

  Arson: The act of deliberately or negligently setting fire to property or protected areas or otherwise causing serious damage through a set blaze.
Typical Punishment(s): Fines of 2000gp plus the cost in repairs, and up to 50 DTDs imprisonment. Death in rare circumstances.   Brandishing weapons without due cause: The act of drawing or otherwise negligently brandishing weaponry in civilized society.
Typical Punishment(s): Fines of 50gp, and up to 10 DTDs imprisonment.   Disturbing the peace: The act of disturbing the peace through noise complaints, disruptive behavior, disparaging and violent actions, and similar actions.
Typical Punishment(s): Fines of 25gp, and edict against triggering act.   Drunk or disorderly contact: The act of drunken and disorderly conduct in public spaces that cause disturbing the peace or destruction of property.
Typical Punishment(s): Fines of 10gp, 1 DTD in the stockades, and edict against triggering act.   Hindering an official investigation: The act of obstructing, delaying, or otherwise preventing the communication of information in an official investigation.
Typical Punishment(s): Fines of 200gp, and 10 DTDs hard labor.   Littering: The act of discarding improperly garbage, rubbish, refuse, and similar untidy objects within public space.
Typical Punishment(s): Fines of 5gp, and edict against triggering act.   Poisoning a city well: Knowingly poisoning a city well or water supply, unknowingly doing so results in a lesser sentence.
Typical Punishment(s): Death.   Petty Theft: The act of taking objects that belong to others of a value no greater than 50gp.
Typical Punishment(s): Fines of 10gp + the cost of the item(s) stolen, confiscation of stolen items, and up to 3 DTDs in the stockade.   Theft: The act of taking objects that belong to others of a value no greater than 1000gp.
Typical Punishment(s): Fines of 50gp + the cost of the item(s) stolen, confiscation of stolen items, branding, and up to 10 DTDs imprisonment.   Grand Larceny: The act of taking objects that belong to others of a value no less than 1000gp.
Typical Punishment(s): Fines of 100gp + the cost of the item(s) stolen, confiscation of stolen items, dismemberment of finger or hand, branding, and up to 50 DTDs imprisonment.   Tax Evasion: The act of willingly evading the payment of taxes to the empire.
Typical Punishment(s): Fines of 1000gp, potential seizure of property, and up to 50 DTDs spent in hard labor for the empire.   Usury: The act or practice of lending coin at unreasonably high rates of interest.
Typical Punishment(s): Fines of 1000gp, and up to 100 DTDs imprisonment.   Vandalism: The act of vandalizing or otherwise damaging public works and structures.
Typical Punishment(s): Fines of 100gp + the cost of repairs, and up to 10 DTDs imprisonment.   Smuggling: The act of transporting illegal or restricted goods without a license, or the act of crossing the border without paying the border fee.
Typical Punishment(s): Fines of 100gp + the cost of the item(s) smuggled, confiscation of smuggled items, dismemberment of finger or hand or branding, and up to 50 DTDs imprisonment.  

Crimes against the Faithful

  Assaulting or impersonating an official Priest: The act of attacking a member of the official Church of the empire.
Typical Punishment(s): Fines of 1,000gp, a flogging of 50 lashes, and up to 20 DTDs of indentured servitude to the church.   Defiling a holy place: The act of vandalizing or corrupting the sanctity of a holy place.
Typical Punishment(s): Fines of 1,000gp + the cost of repairs, up to 10 DTDs of indentured servitude to the church, branding, and flogging for up to 100 lashes.   Heresy: The act of worship or supplication towards a forbidden entity, deity, patron, or otherwise.
Typical Punishment(s): Seizure of all assets and death.   Murdering an official Priest: Seizure of property and death.   Public blasphemy against the church: The act of speaking out against the gods and their doctrine or otherwise speaking blasphemy against The Church.
Typical Punishment(s): Fines of 500gp, and flogging for up to 50 lashes.   Theft of temple goods or offerings: The act of taking objects that belong to The Church.
Typical Punishment(s): Fines of 100gp + the cost of the item(s) stolen, confiscation of stolen items, dismemberment of finger or hand, branding, and up to 50 DTDs imprisonment.   Theft of divine relics: The act of taking objects that belong to The Church.
Typical Punishment(s): Death.   Tomb-robbing: The act of stealing from an entombed grave officially sanctified by The Church.
Typical Punishment(s): Fines of 100gp, confiscation of robbed items, branding, and up to 25 DTDs imprisonment.  

Crimes against the Citizenry

  Assaulting a citizen: The act of attacking a citizen of the empire.
Typical Punishment(s): Fines of 500gp, a flogging of 25 lashes, and up to 10 DTDs in the stockades.   Assaulting a member of the military: The act of attacking a member of the military of the empire.
Typical Punishment(s): Fines of 500gp, a flogging of 25 lashes, and up to 10 DTDs in the stockades.   Blackmailing a citizen: The act of coercing a citizen of the empire in order to receive a reward, monetary or otherwise.
Typical Punishment(s): Fines of 100gp and a flogging of 25 lashes.   Fencing stolen goods: The act of selling objects that belong to others.
Typical Punishment(s): Fines of 100gp + the cost of the item(s) stolen, confiscation of stolen items, branding, and up to 50 DTDs imprisonment.   Murder: The act of murdering a citizen of the empire without justification.
Typical Punishment(s): Fines of 1,000gp and hard labor for up to 100 DTDs, along with up to 5,000gp paid to the victim’s kin, and potentially Exile for up to 5 years or seizure of property and death depending on the severity.   Slavery: The act of selling and buying of slaves.
Typical Punishment(s): Fines of 2,000gp and hard labor for up to 100 DTDs, and potentially Exile for up to 5 years and seizure of property.   Using magic to influence citizenry without their consent: The act of using magic of to influence the citizenry of the empire without their consent.
Typical Punishment(s): Fines of 100gp, with additional fines of 500gp for damages or public humiliation caused, along with up to 10 DTDs within the stockade and edict against triggering act.   Slander: The act of slandering or otherwise speaking falsehoods of a citizen of the empire that results in their defamation.
Typical Punishment(s): Fines of 50gp and a flogging of 25 lashes.   Kidnapping: The act of unlawfully holding or imprisoning a citizen of the empire.
Typical Punishment(s): Fines of 500gp, a flogging of 25 lashes, and up to 10 DTDs in the stockades.
