Desislava

Guilds and Factions

Zuraists

The zuraists cabal is mostly present only in the economic side of the city. Banks and several judges are from the cabal and they hold an iron grip in what the city can do. Among the most important people in the cabal is Leonard Miruna, the owner of the biggest bank in the city.

Mayer

Mayer is actually the name of a company that encompasses everything related to how the city works. It's how all the farmers, butchers, brewers, tavern owners, etc. banded together so prices would be protected and so would their work. The company is run by leaders of each category and together they form part of the city’s senate. The most important figure to note is Vali Lupei, a man that is in charge of the farmers and generally hires adventurers when the city guards are unable to fix something in due time.

Cel Tradat

This is a company formed by the citizens that work on the sea, as it is composed mainly from humanoids of different types. Its members dislike all humans, elfs, dwarfs and other non water-breathing humanoids for what the city did to their ancestors; they also have the least amount of seats in the senate from all the companies. Apart from fishing and collecting treasures underwater, they are the protectors of all humanoids that could suffer any type of attacks or discrimination, so they encompass a lot of miscellaneous jobs of minor importance. The most important figure of note in the company is Arsek Trel, a triton that works as the factions leader.

Reiter

This company is in charge of all trade in the city, mainly sea trade. Traders and merchants banded together in this company to establish fair competition between them, to regulate prices and even to support each other in times of need. It's fair to say that the bourgeois are the citizens with the most power, so they are the strongest influence in the senate. The member with the most renown and the one that generally funds adventurers is Tudor Stoica, he controls a full flotilla of ships and spares no coin if the matter deserves it.

History

The city was founded by Dimitry of Dancya at the very end of his conquest of Berusia, in the year 1,902 of the Astral Divergence. His intentions were to establish a harbor that would further trade with the southern regions and if possible even diplomatic alliances. Desislava became a hub for trade and riches, which saw it populated rather quickly in the following decades and by the end of Dimitry’s empire in 1,938 A.D, the faithful year in which the vampires made a coup to overthrow him, the city was already between the biggest ones in the region.   The vampires saw no point in changing anything about how things worked within the city, which made it a perfect place to go for refugees from other places where the vampires were abusing their powers. This made it so that around the 22nd century vampires started targeting the port city, kidnapping people, abusing the populace and transforming it into another city under their absolute rule.   However, Liana Lorena, the lord of the city at the time struck a deal with the vampires. The downfall of Desislava wasn’t useful for either of them; keeping it as a beacon of hope for those escaping from other cities was helping quell rebellions, as it offered a way out of that hell. There is no need to mention how the citizens of Desislava would benefit from the vampires not mingling in their lives.   Still, the vampires were in their “golden” age, they really didn’t care even if the city itself burned down, they required a tithe and Liana knew what that meant, the slow death of the inhabitants. So she proposed a way to satisfy her overlords, a new, exotic trade of humanoids that would take her people’s place, one that she knew well as they had been allies for years.   In the past century the city of Desislava formed a strong bond with the underwater tribes that resided near the harbor itself. Merfolk, tritons, sirens and even kuo-toa live in small underwater towns that rarely surpass one thousand inhabitants. While the city was growing some problems arose between them and the new fishing boats and trading ships, however, with time skirmishes became treaties that became mutual interests, so the harbor used the goods they could obtain from the tribes and the tribes in turn made use of the influx of new materials, culture and money. It is safe to say that when Liana took the decision to sacrifice her comrades over her people it came with weight on her heart. But the city needed to survive.   The vampires were more than ecstatic for the new “goods” the city was going to provide them, exotic goods indeed.   The war between the tribes started far too quickly, a tribe was set up to become the evil one among the rest, so it was singled out, hunted down and within a few years completely destroyed. The other tribes trusted the actions of the city, so they helped deal with the “traitors”. Sadly reality would soon set in for all tribes as one by one they were marked as enemies and hunted down.   Underwater creatures' blood was no more special than any other humanoid blood, but it soon became an exotic treat and a show of power. Only the richest could afford such things, as there was only one provider, and Liana Lorena made sure to control its supply tightly. Ridiculous prices were asked for the rarest of creatures that were caught, and when the tribes were almost driven to destruction, even just one siren was enough for the vampire lords to promise to leave the city alone for a whole year.   The lord managed to keep this for a couple hundred years, even starting a trade for creatures that were not on the coast that the city controlled. She was ready to sell her very soul and become a vampire just so she could protect the city for longer, not even elves like herself could live forever in the end. But what saved the city was not her iron rule of terror, but the war Elderia brought to the region.   By the year 2,235 A.D, not even a decade after the war started, Desislava was completely off the radar for the vampire lords, the Elderian forces were relentless and ready to do anything to eradicate them. Once the vampires were pushed all the way to the coastal city, they demanded the city’s control be given to them, but once more, lord Liana Lorena came up with a plan. The city was to declare neutrality and become a democracy, giving the power to the citizens, this in the end would make it so the city was not razed to the ground by the Elderian army like some others, and the vampires could, to some extent, hide in it, even if the Elderian forces were to occupy it.   Since then a strong democratic counsel has risen to rule over the city, or so the history books tend to say ...

Points of interest

Taverns, inns and bars

  • The far away troll: a small inn that resides on the outskirts of the city. It's generally calm and warm. The owner is a man called Valentin, who lost an eye defending the city when he was younger.
  • The infamous elf: A tavern ran by a death elf by the name of Sulivan. The tavern is in the middle of the slums and generally attracts the people that decent folk want nothing to do with.
  • The chubby king: A luxurious inn in the middle of town, it also has one of the best restaurants. Its fame is backed by its price, but if adventurers want a treatment worthy of nobles this is their best bet. Personal baths with warm water cost extra.

Miruna Central bank

The biggest bank in the city, also the one with the most renown, The Miruna bank is known to never strand anyone's money and to give (somewhat) fair loans. Most of the city owes the bank in some way or another so it's quite easy for them to get their way with anything they want. The bank itself is a huge building in the middle of the city. In front of it the huge Plaza of the People separates it from the senate building.

Plaza of the People

The plaza is in the middle of the city, kept in very good condition, free of litter and fountains that never stop working. It has become a hub for artists and other performers as the most important people are bound to go through the plaza at some point of their day. Most tourists visit it because of the statues of old, carved in stone, adorning the whole plaza. Its size makes it good for a walk when workers have some free time to spend. Here rich and poor walk side by side as if they were equal, no carriages are allowed and you need to go through it to get to the Miruna bank or the Senate.

The Senate

It's here that all the representatives of the people meet to make decisions on how the city will act and behave. All three companies' representatives sit in a forum-like room where their concerns and needs are heard by the rest. The building is made of bricks, just like the rest of the city, but the finish that all walls have makes it very smooth to the touch.

Clay Quarry

In the outskirts of the city the main building material for the city is extracted, generally by water breathing humanoids that have an easier time dealing with the work invovled. The working conditions in the quarry are deplorable, mostly because the quarry is in the hands of the Mayer company instead of the Cel Tradat, so their workers are not treated like other humanoids.

The Harbor

A harbor that extends quite deep into the city thanks to the river that goes through it, all the ships dock in the port to load and unload cargo. The place is full of city guards and they have no tolerance for those that try to break the law near the city’s main money influx.
