Vatli - The Final Witness

Emptiness, Entropy, Loss

When the times oblivion and the Age of Omens came, there was great despair that arose. As the gods fell silent, the prayers of mortalkind received no response. Many wondered if they would ever hear from the gods again. But there was one that still listened, one that hid themselves away in the dark recesses of the universe. Watching all, observing all, and recording all for they were prepared for when the last spark of life left the universe. When no mortal walked upon any plane, when the souls of the dead fell silent, and for when the first would remake the universe and start anew.   Vatli is an enigmatic existence, and rarely do they respond to prayers. Instead they watch in silence and accept the pleas of the dying. They offer no comfort to them but ensure that a record of their calls to the darkness are not forgotten. On the rare occasions they do reach out to those seeking comfort before their time, it is usually in exchange for something else. However the price the listener pays in the end is far greater. The silence Vatli leaves their followers with is considered maddening, they are gifted a small fragment of knowledge of the cosmos, but no understanding of what they behold. A gift most cannot fathom. Those who can are left changed and can never look at the world the same way again.   For how long Vatli has existed in the universe is unknown, and it is possible the current incarnation is but one of many. Their infamy only came about as a result of the other gods falling silent, leaving them as one of the few still to whisper in the ears of the desperate. Those that listened spurred chaos and destruction, believing the end times had truly come. But for Vatli, it was merely one more event on the road to the final days.

History

Dogma

Home Plane

Vatli hails originally from the boneyard, supposedly once an agent of the Lady of Graves. Recording all those who passed through the River of Souls. But they have long since left this post, staring out in the endless sea of stars, waiting for their final light to fade.

Appearance

Relationships

The Final Witness prefers to avoid contact with the other divinities whenever possible. They see their task as separate and incompatible with the other great powers. Both sides usually leave well enough alone except in the cases of Vatli’s direct meddling. When the Final Witness asks for knowledge to be retrieved from the domains of other divinities does there arise an issue. However, Galdaruhn holds no grudges to the witness, seeing their service as a recordkeeper to the universe as an important one. Especially for the preservation of the spheres.

Temples and Shrines

Regions of Popular Worship

Followers of the Final Witness can be found all over the world, they are not restricted to any species, creed, or sex.

Followers

The followers of Vatli are few and far between, those rarely graced by the voice of the Final Witness. These individuals are provided a task and when they fulfil it, are granted a great reward that their mind cannot possibly handle. This leaves them as mad men preaching about the truth of the stars, the end of days, or foretelling the doom of others on the street. Vatli has no organized church, religion, or faith, only those purposefully touched by the negligent divinity.

Tenets

  • Welcome Your Last. Recognize that every cycle must close. Do not cling to what must pass, nor delay the inevitable.
  • Accept Pain. All losses you suffer are meaningful, take them into yourself and never forget them.
  • Release the Suffering. Do not prolong the deaths of those that suffer, let them rejoin with the universe in peace.

Sins

  • Forsaking Truth. History remembers all, but exaggerations and embellishments have no place within its pages.
  • Joy In Ruin. Just as you must accept your end, feeding on the end of others for amusement or gain is a desecration of solemn endings.
  • Willful Erasure. Do not feed texts, memories, relics, to the void while the universe still draws breath.
