Ruhk

Ruh Island by Naelin
The societarians of the island of Ruh are a nation of decentralized city-states spread through its territory that rule themselves with the command of an elected official known as the RuhRic.   The island's placement in the middle of the Haan Archipelago made the Ruhk an essential nation to forge relationships with for trading and travelling, helping their otherwise technologically simpler culture a successful hub of cultural and material exchange across islands.

Demography

The native population of Ruh is made entirely of scaly societarians.   Though this trait is shared with the island of Karte, the phenotypes that present in each island differ, notably with iguanids and tuataras only being found in Ruh, while crocodilians and turtles are only present in Karte.

Diplomacy

Contrary to the other islands in the Haan Archipelago, the Ruhk don't form a singular soveirgn country, and are instead formed by many city states with their own rules and territories.
When the people of Ruh need to act as one for matters of emergency or foreign policy, representatives of each city-state meet in the largest city, Cyan Stone, which led many foreigners to consider it their "capital".

Ruhk tribes have a strong, ancient alliance with their neighbours on the island of Stunveldt.
During several hundreds of years, the Stunveldti had their borders closed to everyone but the nation of Ruh, making the Ruhk the privileged nation with access to both foreign trade and a great amount of teobrew products.

Genders & Social Roles

The Ruhk follow the most common arrangement of genders and social roles in the archipelago, recognising four genders: neutral, woman, man and shifting.   As the physical aptitudes of scalies depend much more on their phenotype than their sex or gender, gender roles are less tied to work than they are in places like Stunveldt or Dhalmain, and instead are associated to life dynamics.

Clothing

Traditional Ruhk clothing consists of long multilayered skirts with bright contrasting colours and patterns, with the chest left bare or with sashes attached to the skirts. Jewellery is often worn on the neck and around the ankles or as decorations on the waistband of the skirts.   Ruhk tailors often sew lines and guards to the borders of each piece of fabric in strong and contrasting colours or apply small details with turquoise stones.

Naming Twice

When Ruhks have a child, the custom dictates for them to name the baby within the first year with a single adjective, usually a simple word that represents either some physical feature or personality trait of the baby or a desire of the parents for the baby's life.   This simple name accompanies them for 24 years, the age where Ruhks consider people to have reached the most important point of their maturity and to have developed their character enough to receive their definitive name.
On the day of their 24th birthday, every Ruhk goes through their naming ceremony where the RuhRic of their village will announce the person's definitive name after extensive analysis of their characteristics and achievements.   This definitive name is formed by the person's pronoun, a verb and then a modifier.
This verb is chosen from an idea or concept linked to the person, which the village's RuhRic will explain during the ceremony, and is known as the person's "Character", which they use in their daily life.

The Cyan Stone

The mountains of Ruh Island are rich in turquoise, a beautiful gemstone with a characteristic cyan colour. The Ruhk have mined the turquoise for centuries and feature it extensively in architecture as decorative pieces, as well as in jewellery and pottery.
The stone gives the nation the colour of its flag, as well as the name of Cyan Stone City their most important city-state.

Looking at the sky

More than a thousand years ago, the Ruhks followed a religion known as the "Cult to the Stars", based around the belief that the celestial bodies had direct influence over the laws of nature on Vhas, their planet and that their rare lives could change the course of destiny aeons away.
The "Stargazers", as their followers were called, believed the dogma that the stars are the only thing "granted", understanding everything else as ephemeral except for them.
The Cult of the Stars is believed to have started its downfall in 1356 E.Alz with the death of the star Vulkenar in a supernova that caused a great fracture in the beliefs and faith of the stargazers.   Despite the religious basis being mostly abandoned today, astronomy is still considered an important and noble profession, with the best knowledge in astronomy coming from this island and its many observatories, the largest and most recent of which is the Cyan Tower of the Stars in Cyan Stone City, repurposed from its previous use as the home of the RuhRic's family before The High Rust destroyed the top half of the building.   This area of science created an important diplomatic connection between the Ruhk and the followers of Primarite, the "Law of Space" in the Autonomist religion of the Dhalmanite people to the northwest.

Mourning a Star

The supernova of Vulkenar, known in the island as Glorious Vulkenar is commemorated by the Ruhk to this day in the two-day holiday known as "Eve & Mourning of Vulkenar", celebrated each year on the 13th and 14th of Birthing.
During the Eve of Vulkenar on the first day, people dine together, tell the story of the dead star to their children and go stargazing at night, as the observatories of the island open to the public for the event.
The next day during the Mourning of Vulkenar, people reflect on the concept of nothing being granted, and perform activities they had been postponing for a long time, such as visiting family members or making big decisions. On this day people are encouraged to express their appreciation and love and to tell secrets they had been holding on their chest for too long.
