The Making of Eurinomos
Eurinomos is an early man believed to be the first one to successfully tame a dragon, thus ending the era where the men of Syloson lived in fear of these great creatures. Since very little is known about his life before his first ride, the public has been free to speculate on what his upbringing was like. This legend is the one to have gained the most popularity.
Summary
Eurinomos was abandoned as an infant by his parents. Left to crawl on his own out in the wilderness, he was come across by two dragons. Seeing that he wasn't a threat, and possibly taking pity on him, they took him back to their lair and began raising him as if he were one of their own. Until he was 14, he ate amongst dragons, slept amongst them, and became almost as much of a dragon as he was a person. When he was 14, he was discovered by Fire Priests while out in the forest, who took him back to human society, where he learned how to properly be a human. While he eventually learned how to act like a human, he never forgot his original upbringing.
On his 20th birthday, Eurinomos dared to venture out into the dragon grounds, missing those with whom he had been raised. As luck would have it, the first one he came across was Orion, one of the dragons who he had been raised with as a child, and whom he had viewed as a brother. Orion let Eurinomos onto his back, and they flew out into the main village square together. The villagers were initially terrified, but once they saw one of their own on the great beast's back, their fear turned to awe. From that day on, society would be changed.
Historical Basis
The first records of Eurinomos's existence are from a monastery on the Finger Peninsula of the Central Island, which reports taking in a teenage orphan who, not having a name, was given the name Eurinomos after the older brother of one priest. The first ride of the dragon that would later be dubbed Orion is also confirmed to have happened. However, there is no way to confirm the portion about him being raised by dragons, and thus, most historians conclude that he was simply a feral child.
Spread
The tale is known by almost everyone in the rural parts of Syloson, where the tradition of folk tales may as well be a second language. Parents often tell it to their children to let them know why, despite being out in the open and exposed to dragons, they are still safe from harm. While it is not completely unknown in the cities, it is much less popular due to the relative safety from wild elements.
In Literature
The epic poem "Tamer of Dragons" was the first major piece of literature to tell the story. It displays Eurinomos as someone who was always the best at everything in life, from hunting for food to building a fire. While regarded by literary critics as primitive now, it is still held in high regard for its literary influence, as it was one of the first large scale poems to gain popularity. Several short stories have been written about his time reintegrating into human society, mostly portraying him as a poor man being taken from his rightful home against his will. The novel "I Am Not One of You" is the most popular work in this category.
In Art
The stone statue "Syloson's Savior" was built at the very itp of the Finger Peninsula, the place where Eurinomos was civilized. Elsewhere, there have been murals made of his feat, with one particular covering the entire back wall of a baker in the Eastern Half of Reznok and showing him riding the dragon Orion.
