Reznok
The city where it all happens
Geography
Lying on both sides of the River Naelos, right before it splits in two, the city looks almost like a circle cut in half, with the two sides an inch apart. The eastern half rests on a slope towards the river, with the highest point containing the royal palace. The western half is rather flat by contrast. The two halves are connected by Eanar I Bridge and Martyr's Bridge, both of which were built at the same time, despite the logistical nightmare that ensued.
History
Before the city was founded, the site that is now Reznok was the home of the national university, simply known as the National Academy, founded in 756. The then largely undeveloped land was chosen due the lack of many trees, which made constructing buildings easier. Over time, many vendors and merchants came to the area to take advantage of the large student population. As the population grew, more graduates began staying in the area and beginning their own businesses, leading to the incorporation of Reznok as its own city in 1079. Shortly before the War of Extinction began, the last Arkellian king, Irros, had united the city with the royal grounds across the river, at that point simply called "king's city," hoping to keep a close eye on the increasingly radical student population.
What really helped Reznok grow was the efforts of the first Leader of the Naguros Dynasty, Eanar I. His first act upon taking control was to spur a massive regeneration project for the city. As opposed to the passive governance of before, this turned the city from an overcrowded slum into a thriving metropolis. Today, the city is more than just where the Leader happens to live and where the national university happens to be. It's the city where everything happens.
The City Today
The Eastern Half, mostly due to its proximity to the royal palace, is much more higher class and has similarly high end attractions. The Western Half, on the other end, is far more lively and interesting. Most of this is due to the proximity to the University, as students usually can't afford fancier things. Division remains an issue within the city. Those from the Eastern half view the West as being rowdy and uncultured, while those from the Western half view the East as being elitist and snobby. Despite this, outsiders are sure to find something to their liking should they visit, as they typically remain blind to intra-city problems.
Demographics
Humans/Fire Warriors
Fire Warriors make up a comparatively smaller percentage of the population, only about 10%. This is due to most being needed in the rural areas as a form of royal policing. Those that do live in the city are also mostly concentrated in policing.
Social Class
While census data is largely unreliable, the best estimate onclass makeup is as follows: 2% Upper Class, 44% Middle Class, 54% Working Class. The working class population is almost entirely confined to the Western Half.
Government
The city is run cooperatively between an elected city council and an appointed royal board. There is a mayor who is, in theory, subordinate to the Royal Leader, but how much the Leader actually interferes has varied depending on who sits on the throne.
Defences
The city is walled on all sides, and there are two castles, each to the north and south, to offer protection from dangerous ships that come up and down the river.
Industry & Trade
The fishing industry started out as the dominant trade due to the River Naelos's abundance of aquatic food sources, and it remains a dominant force. Once University graduates began to stay in the city after graduation, the printing industry began to grow exponentially, both in academia and fiction. Tourism remains a central industry as well, especially for those in the less densely populated Eastern Half, as without tourists, many businesses wouldn't have enough customers to stay afloat. The largest factory in the city is in the business of making dinnerware, and this is one of their largest exports, not related to fish or books. Finally, as is the case with any self-respecting capital city, the banking industry is booming.
Infrastructure
The infrastructural highlight of the city is the two bridges, Einar II Bridge and Martyr's Bridge. Able to cross the River Naelos ,but also high enough to not block the path of ships, they were considered the greatest architectural marvel in the world at the time they were built. Aside from that, the sewer system, while needing a 20-year construction period to become functional, was another key feature of the city that made it ahead of its time.
All of the roads in Naeolos are cobblestone. Proposals have been made to properly pave them, but the council has always stalled over which area to pave first.
Districts
The waterfront districts are the most visitor-friendly, as the city government knows that the view is what many people have come to see, and has therefore made policing the district a high priority. On the other end of the spectrum, the centralmost district on the Western half is widely known as "Shadow Alley," a place where outsiders should not go, and where even longtime locals are wary to tread even after dark. This is a place owned by the criminals.
Guilds and Factions
The fisherman's guild started out as the most powerful in the city, initially able to push the government against fully developing the riverbank region so as to not impede on their access. The government was finally able to develop the region, but only after agreeing to build piers so as to let the fishing industry continue. The guild of policemen is the largest guild not related to a trade, and the city government has long struggled with keeping it in check. The printers' and factory workers' guilds are also large in size.
Tourism
Those with high tastes will want to see the Eastern Half with its museums, music halls, and fine dining. However, everyone else will surely prefer the Western Half. Its energy and nightlife are unmatched, the people are friendlier, and it's said that you can't really know the city until you've seen the Western Half. Despite the presence of bridges, not all trips across the river are still popular, and some boats offer cafe service while parked out in the river. Enjoys of good alcohol will enjoy the interesting brews served in Western Half pubs.
Architecture
For protection against dragons, almost all buildings are made using stone or brick, although the brick is largely confined to the Eastern Half. The popular trend is to construct buildings in gray, as a compromise between light reflecting white and light absorbing black. Doors, however, are open to much more decoration. For artists, they can seek to make money by accepting commissions for door murals. After all, a door is the last thing a person sees before they enter a building.
Climate
The winters of Reznok are especially frigid, given its proximity to the river, while the summers are humid. Heavy rains were known to cause flooding in the past, although improved infrastructure has largely mitigated this problem.
