If Z-Man were born anywhere else, there might've been an uproar. But with how strange the world became with super powered people being all over the globe, it wasn't that hard to accept for the Ainu. Z-man's grandmother was saved from the ocean by an Ainu fisherman and brought back to their city. They helped her acclimate to the new area, and rebuild her life away from prying eyes.
His grandmother often told stories of his grandfather, he was a hero who liked to help people. A strong fighter and quick witted too, until he disappeared after her fall. Z-Man loved hearing them at night, dreaming of one day doing the same and somehow convincing his dad to fight crime with. Z-Man's father never wanted to be in the spotlight, and never liked the idea of getting attention. But the stories also reassured him about his looks, while the Ainu had no issue with him. He couldn't help feeling different all the time, being half man half chimp.
During one of his moments of self doubt traversing through the forest, he saw a some of the Ainu deep in the forest which was very strange. They weren't dressed normally, and seemed to not want to be seen. Then he watched as they all turned into bears, ran into the trees and surrounded him. After he eased some of their tensions, they welcomed him into their village. He met his best friend in this village, and they taught him their fighting techniques. This is what gave him the courage to finally be a hero like his grandfather. But the crime he fights is a lot more supernatural in nature, often relying on his best friend to help him with the strangeness.
