Personal history
Valentine was an accomplished surgeon, who could've also become a certified neurosurgeon if he hadn't gotten absolutely sick of medical school. So he applied for residency at a local hospital and was promptly hired. Only because he had been critical in helping save the lives of two high profile patients while he was still in residency. There was no other way to say it but he was damn good at what he did. He could figure out a frustratingly elusive diagnosis by looking through external factors as well as internal. It brought him pure joy to save people, and he planned on working until his hands were no longer steady.
That was not his path though, throughout a year it seemed like nothing he could do worked. He lost patient after patient after patient. Nothing he did was off the books, his work was medically and legally sound. He did his research and checked all external factors but the patients would die all the same. It seemed as if his luck, and skill had completely left him. With his last patient being no less than ten, he watched those bright eyes go dim for last time and he cracked. He loved his job, he loved to save people, he loved his coworkers, he loved his friends, he loved his enemies, he loved his family and strangers. He loved hard, and that love would not allow him to lose anyone ever again. He would allow absolutely no one's heart to stop on his watch. That idea, that mantra just repeated in his head, warping him from the kind and resilient doctor, to the ceaseless collector of the hopeless.
Valentine would become a somewhat hero, stopping crimes if he felt it may cause lethal injuries to innocent people. But if someone got injured, and he felt that they would die, he would whisk them away to his lab. Performing whatever procedure necessary to keep them alive. He didn't discriminate either, citizen or criminal, hero or villain, if you were near death he was going to do whatever it took to keep you alive. But alive doesn't mean living, being conscious or able to speak or move, those were bonuses to Valentine; but as long as your heart was beating he thought it was a success. This practice is seen by many as insane, and many don't want him anywhere around if they get hurt.
