Personal history
After Darnell finished college he went straight to the military, even though he was told repeatedly by various people he went about it backwards. He figured he could pay off his loans and get benefits by the time he finished serving. He was deployed to the middle east as a pilot, and was shot down 2 years after he arrived. He survived but lost his arms, and got home expecting to be taken care of for his service.
To his surprise the VA was run by people who could care less about its veterans. Waiting months to see a doctor for the pain, waitlisted for therapy, money coming sporadically if it came at all. Darnell realized serving might've been the greatest mistake of his life. Costing him more than what it gave him. Darnell met and old friend, who knew someone that was looking for volunteers for a project. Knowing he had nothing else to lose, he accepted.
The friend of a friend happened to be apart of one of the leading think tanks focused on robotics. They fashioned him some shiny new arms, with an implant in his brain to control them. It came with extensive weaponry, but he was happy just to have hands again. They asked him to be a suit, their corporate mascot hero. He refused, which caught them off guard. He served under the army and felt betrayed, and didn't feel like he had the stomach for serving someone else. But he would be a hero, he would let everyone know who turned him into one. He would freely promote and thank them. But he wouldn't fight their corporate battles for them or prioritize appearances and profits over doing the right thing.
He chose the name H.N.I.C. as a way of taking control of his own life, and because of the response it evokes. Publicly he says it stands for Heroic Neural Interface Citizen, sometimes replacing citizen with core. But privately he acknowledges it means what everyone knows it to mean.
