BUILD YOUR OWN WORLD Like what you see? Become the Master of your own Universe!

Summer Camp Prep 2025

It's almost time for Summer Camp! I know what I want to do, but I have to idea how July will be for me so we'll just have to see how things turn out.

Nourishment

This is the world I'll be working with. It's an alternate modern world, with superheroes. As that stands, they probably have most of their needs met in much the same way as we do. It will be interesting to consider how supply chains might be different when you have people who can make things grow with a look. I have a feeling this prompt set will push me to consider the more philosophical aspects, but possibly also what might happen in the aftermath of a big battle. How do things get put back to normal?
My motivations for this world are to build something up so I'm working on the book series that I want to write. I want it to be a long series so there's a lot of ground to cover, and a lot of background to set up. I'm not planning on focusing on any particular area until I have a sense of what the prompts are.

Yeah. I'm not going to update my articles. I should, because there's a fair amount of information involved, and I've changed a couple things since I wrote it, but I'm not going to. It's more about energy allotment. If I use it now, I'm not going to have a good time of it in July. I will at least read the meta and refresh myself on the world. It's one I dwell on a lot so I'm pretty sure I'll be fine.

Roots

To focus on the history of this world I could look at a lot of different things. I probably won't go too far into the past, just to the parents of my main character. Possibly something for the grandparents as well. There's a possible historical superhero story that I could focus on.
As for my home page, I'm also not going to fix this. I'm not going to have a ton of energy for July so I'm conserving what I can. If I was in an editing mood, I'd change the name of the world to something more specific and less placeholder (Superheroes Assorted is not a good name but it's all I've got), and I would expand the homepage a little bit because right now it's kind of short.
My first world building project is sort of on here? I built it well before I was on World Anvil, so whatever is here is more just because I felt like it. I do have extensive notes on my own computer so I'll refer back to those. The biggest mistake I made was letting it sprawl out too much without doing anything with it. It's huge, with five continents, several countries, and numerous species. It's too big and too developed to really let it be easy to work with.
However, it's also got a lot of fun details. I made the effort to spread out major settlements for the different sentient species, and went to the trouble of intermingling them in some places, concentrating them in others, and generally making it interesting. If I was to create a story from any given part of that world, I could tell you the general demographics. If I created a city, I'd know who would be most likely to be in charge, and have a sense of what the accommodation architecture would be like.
To take a lesson for my current world, it's that sometimes you do want to really lean in with one particular baseline category and really flesh it out so that when the time comes, you can have that one thing established and then add on the other things as necessary.

Metamorphosis

I think the specific metamorphosis is that main character Ruby Gray is attempting to expose something that SIVIC did in the past, which would definitely shift how people with superpowers are treated. I don't know that's something I can focus on, especially since by the look of some other themes I'll want to focus more on historical events, so I'll just have to see what comes up as the month progresses.
I'm not sure I really want to break out of my comfort zone for this. As I said, it's going to be a long month and I'm already tired. I think I can count watching Nobody and reading Mark Lawrence as something new. For the movie, it was a fantastic example of little moments of foreshadowing and how to reveal the core of a character gradually. For the book (The Book That Wouldn't Burn), I'm not far enough to say what it's showing me. I guess don't just stick to the same basic authors but try to branch out, even if it's still in a familiar genre.
I kind of botched the last assignment a little by picking a timeline instead of an article. Also I was utterly uninterested in spending more time searching for interesting articles when I spent twenty minutes searching for how to make the external links work. The new article edit system isn't really my jam. I just want to be able to see more than one paragraph, but the old UI breaks what little formatting I add. I don't need my article name to be visible at all times. Please just let me scroll down so I have a little more space for the words I'm working on. I'm too tired to have to figure out bbcode without an easy help link.
Full Story Timeline, by wordigirl : Lots of fun little teasers for a whole bigger story that intrigues me.
Chromatic Gardens, by Loup Des Bois: I just like glass, and stained glass windows. This is a cool story as to why they're utterly necessary in this world.
Fey Recipes: Dieter's Cake, by Elvira : Mythology is fun. It's even more fun when it's about something relatable.

Tomorrow

There are a lot of factions already that are looking to the future of this world. Ruby's goal is relatively simple: expose past corruption. Epoch Society goals are to supposedly ensure that ordinary people can have superpowers. Really, it's to ensure that they can give powers to whoever they want to. SIVIC ultimately wants powered people to be fully integrated into society, ordinary and mundane. The Chaos Coalition wants the same thing, but with greater freedoms involved. I kind of want to see if I can maybe focus on creating a new faction in all of this, possibly one with more public facing elements. No ideas yet, but I should have a bit of time to come up with something.
My writing schedule is the fact that I'm about to have a baby and I don't have a lot other than doctor's appointments to do this summer so I'm going to write as much as I am physically capable of. Which is less than normal with how tired I feel constantly, but more than what it will be when we get to the fall. I've got my little nest here, and I'm going to make this happen because who knows what will be going on this time next year.
My accountability is my husband, because he's going to find out what I'm writing about whether he wants to or not. I'm hoping to persuade him to try Summer Camp as well, so we can be buddies in this. Fingers crossed!
