Mertasa Portal Tech
It could revolutionize the world. If it was real, and the people purporting to make it weren't lying out the wazoo.
A/n: Under some circumstances, I'd say this was sour grapes, since Ruby has a portal gun that she's used for ages and would probably want to commercialize if it were made of readily-available components. It's not, though, and so if anyone would know if this tech was legit or not, it would be her.
First of all, we do have a few examples of portals. Alien tech is out there on a broader scale, and then you have a handful of Enhanced who can generate portals themselves. The issue is not that portals can't exist, it's that there are very few ways to make them cost effective on a smaller personal scale.
You want to travel across the galaxy? Sure. That's what Mercury Depot is for. It's stable, the energy source is good, and the end point is far enough away to not cause interference. If you know someone, also good. Portalists have an innate sense of where to send stuff so you don't end up in a wall.
Mertasa portal tech has absolutely none of those things. Despite their claims, and careful demonstrations showing that yes, they can create portals, this does nothing to keep those portals from ending up exactly where they shouldn't be. The positioning required is delicate and they just don't have that part down.
And that's without getting into the dangers of premature deactivation cutting off someone's leg, or worse. Their power sources operate at far too short a scale to be safe.
And if it wasn't for their stupid hype department making everyone think that this is the next big thing, it wouldn't have to be an issue, but they are and it is. A dozen televised displays of how cool it looks when a portal activates, someone pops through in a predetermined way, and then it's off before anyone can ask questions.
