Sibyl

A sibyl is an oracle or prophet of a divine nature.

Abilities

Sibyls are not tied to any specific deity though they tend to find home among the cults of Hecate, Nyx, Phaeton, or Selene. They claim no origin of their abilities from those deities or any other and merely claim the gods as a whole are responsible.

Notably a sibyl is unable to recall any of the oracular prophecies they give. They enter into a state where they become unaware of their identify and where they are. Some enter into a frenzied state and others only prophesize during deep sleep.

History

Throughout history there have only ever been a handful of sibyls at a time. From as few as one to as many as ten or eleven. There seemed to be no rhyme or reason as to what qualified one to be a sibyl. They could be any ancestry, could be from any geographic location, could be from any social or economic status.

Their prophecies have also been met with a great deal of suspicion and apprehension from those who might feel threatened or otherwise unhappy with a certain prophecy. As such, there has been a historical precedence of sibyls finding their lives ended prematurely. Though none certainly claimed credit for such assassinations it has made the identification and protection of undiscovered and known sibyls a priority among many of the temples as well as certain private individuals who might want to control such valuable oracular information.
