Martek
The archmage Martek was a powerful wizard living at the end of the Raurin Empire a millennium ago. He was noted for his defence of the area and his opposition to the forces of evil, beating back dark foes on several occasions. According to legend he defeated a great evil and protected the world, but Martek's Warning foretold that the evil was only bound, not destroyed, and it would return one thousand years after their battle.
The few surviving records of the era do not record what the evil was, only that if Martek had not intervened every living creature in the realm would have been slaughtered or enslaved. Details of his Spheres of Power were also lost - artefacts which he said would be found by the right group of heroes, and allow them to destroy the evil once and for all. Wizards and treasure-seekers have combed the desert fruitlessly since his death, trying to find his citadel or his final resting place.
