Duke Karr of Nortland
Duke Edwyn Karr, The Fairmane
Ruler of the Dutchy of Nortland and all of Nortland proper, 40 years of age
Charismatic and shrewd diplomat, known for calculated risks, quietly ambitious, covets the legendary Sunblade, Brother-in-law to Count Orpen.
Duke Karr was born on the summer solstice, thought to be a powerful blessing from the sun god himself. And those around him would say that's pretty true, as life has been very easy for the Duke. Born intelligent, handsome, and kind, he found those around him naturally were drawn to him not just because of his name and wealth but because of his person. He grew up with great fanfare and quickly gained the nickname "Edwyn Fairmane" when at 13 he met one of the princess's of the Northern Kingdom and she fainted due to his looks and charm.
He became Duke young, only 20 years of age after his father passed quietly in his sleep. There was a little bump in the road when his uncle tried to take the throne from him, but to his shock his own forces joined the young duke and he was left with a paltry 300 men. Edwyn quickly put done the short lived rebellion, and even though it was more a massacre then a battle as he outnumbered his uncles forces 8 to 1, he was heralded and paraded through the streets. He waved and smiled, being the kind, noble, and now victorious leader they all expected.
What they didnt see was behind that glowing smile was the end of a well thought out plan. in the months leading up to his fathers death, Edwyn had subtly maneuvered his uncle into getting slighted time and time again. He spent time and serious coin placing agents into his uncles retainers, sometimes to only have them whisper one little phrase that might trigger something ambitious or wrathful in his uncle. And while he had his men do this, he spent time ingratiating the nobles and soldiers to him, even the ones he knew his uncle would call upon. You see, being the best was boring, and being the kind charming duke wouldn't put him in the history books.
And so the Duke has gone on for 20 years unchallenged by any vassal or his peers the other dukes, only by himself. He would release a bear he had raised and groomed to be as large and vicious as possible into the woods close to a town. When it killed some villagers, he would be there to nobly ride out and face it himself. Raiders stopped coming to raid his lands on their own free will because they were fearful of his reputation, so he would pose as a political rival and pay them himself to do it. When they came can burned a village, he rushed to the rescue and slayed the Captain himself. Anything he could do to get his name in the history books he arranged. But one thought stuck to him, an itch he wanted to scratch but couldn't figure out how.
The Sunblade was one of, if not the, most famous weapon in the world, and it sat in his dutchy being wielded by one who's name was known even wider then his. Ser Galric infuriated the Duke. Here was a man who had traveled far and wide in his youth, fighting and winning all over the known lands, all for... fun. Not for his legacy or to have his name go down as one of the greatest warriors in the world, but just because he wanted to gain life experience before settling down as a simple family man and Baron of a tiny castle in the mountains. The man had zero ambition, how did he deserve to wield a legend? So, when Count Regalia started to whisper about the Solhaime's, Edwyn saw a way to use him. He made it seem that he was also somewhat leery of their power, and encouraged him to keep looking for a way. And finally the Count came to him. He had been approached by Vaeron Solhaime, who was willing to turn traitor against his whole family. The Duke acted surprised, but he wasn't. Vaeron had spent a year in Norwynne and during that time the duke had spoken to him often. He had used his now veteran spy team to whisper the very thoughts in Vaeron's head that made him think he was better then his brother, better then his father. So, acting torn and conflicted, he promised 400 men and 100 of his knights to the cause, but he made Regalia promise to leave civilians alone and help support Vaeron when he came to power, after all, its the people that matter most. A long gamble finally paying off. He only had to risk a small force to gain that which would make his legacy eternal. Duke Edwyn Fairmane, the Sunblade. All he could do was tell his retainers he needed time to pray for the souls that were about to be lost, and when he was alone with only his spymaster Maerla Vex he let out one of his signature joyful laughs. The Sunblade would be his, he had recruited Ser Caldus Thorne, a rare retiree of the Ordo Serephine, for this very day. He would kill Galric, leaving it ownerless, and no one would disagree with him not giving it to Vaeron, no traitor to his family would ever be worthy of the Sunblade. With the male members of the family dead, well except for Galric's son of course, but no one really knew much about him, most still thought him dead from that time his ship sank off Ra'ahet. He wasnt ebven in the kingdom, he would have the blade before the kid ever heard about what happened and by then it would have chosen him, leaving him without a claim. But with him gone and the others dead, he would become the greatest Karr ever. So, let it begin.
