Veronian
Once believed to be the tongue of the gods, Veronian is considered to be the oldest language documented, the language of myths and legends and prayers. Most people do not know a single word in it besides common phrases or sayings that took root in their own common tongue, it's just considered to be a weird borrowed word and nothing more and it is just something that has always been used over the centuries.
Veronians is the name chosen for the first civilisation in these lands and for the runes that are still discovered from time to time in caves and in broken tablets during mining or excavations - so they definitely existed, but their divine origin is being disputed. Still they have a solid footing in the current culture and many people cannot really imagine they once walked the earth like everybody else. All of what they achieved must be devine or else it would seem completely impossible.
While to commoners Veronian is the language of the sky, to nobility it is something everyone must learn since their early age, some even learn it before their own mother tongue. Because it was once believed to be the tongue of the gods, if nobles are appointed by heavens to rule the lands, they should speak their same language. Nowadays many scholars assume that Veronians were mortal, but in some way more advanced than the current human civilisation in these lands. Still Veronian as a language is considered to be the language of the chosen ones, of the divine and spiritual, and in some occassions, the language of magic. It is continuously studied and kept alive in many aspects of human life, even though those who spoke it originaly are long gone.
It is a badge of honour for nobility to be able to speak it and the most common reason why women and girls are tought to read and write.
Thank you for reading my world!
I used Summer Camp this year to generate new ideas that I can explore and play around with in the months to come. All of my articles are first drafts, little sketches that need further development.
