Inhalation Sickness

With the advancement in air magic and its more widespread use, a new sickness is starting to become more and more of a problem. The so called inhalation sickness is nowadays expected to be the second biggest cause of premature death among magicians, right after generic over exertion. Previously unknown condition was named as such because scholars expect it to be casued by the abnormal inhalation of smoke and magically infused air that will slowly but surely alter the physiology of a person.   Inhalation sickness starts as a somewhat innocent cough that could be cause by nothing more than a common cold. However it is the sign that the magician is slowly but surely becoming absolutely dependent on magical air and thier lungs are now starting to reject regular air with oxygen. There are methods how to slow the sickness down but so far no one has been fully successful in completely curing it. The only way is to potentially seize using magic altogether but even when taking such drastic measures the sickness still progresses it just lacks fuel and therefore the afflicted patient has the biggest chance on keeping their life as long as ever.   In the times of war or when a natural disaster was imminent, many mages would work over time either out of their own volition or by the order of the ruling class in trying to deal with the threats and lead as many people to safety, victory or whatever else was the desired outcome. Some believe that some sort of a poisonous combination of magical formula started this epidemic, but by this point too many cases were reported to solely blame this on simple poisoning. It is becoming more and more clear that the advances of magic are coming hand in hand with some serious side effects and should there be no solution to them, we might run out of having magicians alltogether.

Thank you for reading my world!

I used Summer Camp this year to generate new ideas that I can explore and play around with in the months to come. All of my articles are first drafts, little sketches that need further development.
