Drow

One of Faerûn's most reviled races, the drow are widely regarded as inherently evil due to their corrupt origin as followers of Lolth, well before she was known by that name, in the days when she tried to betray Corellon, leading to the War of the Seldarine. As the War of the Seldarine was back around -30,000 DR (the current year in Faerûn is 1495), one might think people would have gotten over it, but of course that's only, like, 4,500 years ago in elf years.   Though it's true that many drow continue to worship Lolth, living in rigidly hierarchical, matriarchal societies built on slavery, cruelty, and betrayal deep in the Underdark, it's also true that many drow oppose their Lolth-sworn brethren, and have done so for tens of millennia. Of particular note are those drow who worship Eilistraee, daughter of Lolth and Corellon.   Though dark skin is common among drow, particularly as darker skin tones have allowed them to better blend into the shadows of the Underdark, there are many drow whose skin presents in lighter shades of gray, blue, and purple. However, regardless of skin tone, all drow do poorly in direct sunlight.   Like other elves, drow can live for several centuries, though most drow do not, thanks largely to the machinations of their fellow drow, and the perils of life in the Underdark. Aboveground, the welcome drow can look to receive varies wildly from place to place; in cosmopolitan cities such as Waterdeep, at least, it's entirely possible for drow to live normal lives, even if their fellow citizens are more likely to guard their coin purses when a drow is in sight.
