Che'jarr - Cleves War
The Che'jarr and Cleves are two of the island nations that make up the Pal'taben alliance. Being a set of smaller nations and usually friendly with one another there has rarely been an issue with the annual Riunione or gathering of the leaders or heirs of the islands. Each year a different nation hosts with exceptions for disasters (since typhoons and hurricanes can make such duties difficult). The Che'jarr - Cleves war started at one such event most other islanders think by accident. Fifty four years ago the Suuli nation was hosting all of the others and on the fifth day a masque was held. Music, dancing, and fun and games where the royalty can mix with lower nobility and they can all talk without reservation of being outed. Normally these affairs help to keep the royalty grounded because the other nobles can speak their minds and inform their lieges of things they normally couldn't say. Then once business is done everyone drinks and then sleeps it off.
This time though a small misfortune took place. The queen and king of Che'jarr had picked out the exact same clothier and tailor for their wardrobe as the king and queen of Cleves. Depending on which island you're on relates the tale differently as to who retained the tailor first. The rest of the popular story suggests that the other royal family hired the tailor second to try and complete a gambit. No matter the case the result was that they arrived in identical outfits. Also at different times, if this was on purpose or by accident again no one knows the truth. As you may have surmised already, they accidentally switched partners after the evening was turning from business to leisure. What is known as a fact is that the king of Che'jarr and the queen of Cleves found them selves in a private alcove. Then the queen of Cleves screamed and the king of Che'jarr called for guards. They apparently realized something was wrong when they kissed but thinking that this was their long time married partner... hands had already wandered where they shouldn't have.
From there shouting and accusations of seduction, attempts at supplanting an heir, and worse arose. The King of Che'jarr said that the queen had enticed him and was trying to have her way with him, the queen suggested that he was trying to replace his husbands children with his own... The accusations got worse and so did tempers. From there a set of raids on each others island ensued and then outright war.
Being island nations they made war mostly by naval battle but each would raid the others shores. The bloodshed mounted and the waters became unsafe for the rest of the island nations as both were quick to attack and slow to ponder who's ship it was. this was partially because as with all wars the treasury depleted and a few incidents here or there could be forgiven especially if it helped to fill the depleting war chest. Both islands found themselves surrounded by the rest of the alliance navies because the rest of the nations had grown tired of their 'squabble.' The monarchs were told that they could abdicate or declare peace. They chose to declare peace but both couples abdicated within the next decade as well. The islanders of each nation have ever since held a grudge against one another.
