Drow

The Drow of the Stolen Expanse are a proud and insular people, dwelling in a single subterranean city known as Umbravarn—the City of Endless Night. Built into the hollow heart of the Stoneveil Mountains, Umbravarn is a vast, cathedral-like metropolis illuminated by phosphorescent fungi, shimmering crystal veins, and floating orbs of arcane twilight. Drow society is ancient, rigidly stratified, and deeply shaped by the values of secrecy, survival, and cunning.

Caste Structure: House-Named Hierarchy

Drow culture is defined by a strict caste system where status, rights, and privileges are tied directly to one’s house name—a mark of lineage, honor, and magical purity. These names are passed through matriarchal lines and form the core of Drow identity.

1. High Nobility (Firstborn Houses)

These are the oldest and most powerful families, claiming direct descent from the original Founders of Umbravarn. They dominate politics, arcane education, and the priesthood.

2. Lesser Nobility (Blooded Houses)

These houses serve the high nobility in exchange for influence and access to arcane and martial training. They form the bulk of Umbravarn’s elite military officers, stewards, and ambassadors.

3. Artisan Castes (Forged Houses)

These families are elevated from common stock for exceptional craftsmanship, magical innovation, or service to the noble houses. Their names are earned, not inherited.

4. Commonborn (Nameless or Servile)

Those without a formal house name are considered lower caste. They work as laborers, servants, or footsoldiers. It is possible—though exceedingly rare—for commonborn to earn a house name through exceptional achievement.
