STUN
"The Core Worlds are wildly different from the outer rim you two are so used to. From the tech to the scale of everything, it's nowhere near the same. Even Torgallon would look like a small trading post here. The most notable difference is probably the STUN. I mean, look. No big wars, no annexing small states, no remnants of collapsed empires, none of that. There's a sense of unity here. The politics are also rather different due to that, less belligerent countries like Anakrion and more covert stuff and subtle manouvering."
The Space Territories of the United Nations.
The super-state type entity that manages the center of human space and keeps the peace. Originally, at least. Encompassing about 18 000 star systems and hundreds of thousands of nations and city- and habitat-states in total, it manages an overarching community, trade system, and military, all in order to foster unity and keep the peace and, if need be, as definitely be, fight a large-scale war should one happen. Largely centered in the Core Worlds.History
Formed after the devastation and heavy damage of the Fourth World War, the STUN was formed from the then very disorganized and barely functional United Nations, which had lost much of its relevance over the last few centuries as humanity expanded over the Solar System and then the close-by stars and established something of an interstellar civilization. During that time, the Third World War had encouraged what was functionally a predecessor of the modern STUN, though one that didn't survive the test of time. Initially, the STUN was established by some core nations of Earth, with the main goal being continued peacekeeping and prevention of another major war like the Fourth World War. It expanded rather fast, and merely a few decades after its creation, nearly all of the Sol System, as well as several nearby star systems were under its wing. After some time, it started to properly establish itself, collecting taxes and building up a military force, one that would become the ASTUN. And, for the next five and a half centuries, it succeeded. It grew in size and influence, as did its forces. Countless small skirmishes within and between STUN member states happened here and there, but as long as they didn't threaten to spill over in any meaningful way, they were no issue. If they did, the ASTUN would intervene, usually forcing a peace or at least a de-escalation between the parties; from preventative action within STUN space to interventions near the borders. Notable events include the three task forces sent against the Machine Empire of Cine to slow its expansion and as a warning, to the border conflicts with Second Core nations, to the ongoing eternal wars of Endured Wrath. That is, of course, until the The Coalition of a thousand Free Worlds emerged. Founded by a large amount of nations unhappy with the growth and taxes of the STUN, it would poise itself as an enemy of the supernation, growing to encompass a very large swathe of human space in two decades. Then, it declared war, and the The Fifth World War began, and human space was engulfed in a war larger than any before it.Politics
Governance
The STUN's highest leadership is the Council of Twenty. Each has an assigned region, numbering 23 total, varying significantly in size, though roughly even in population. They, on paper, govern their respective areas largely with impunity, though in practice, most decide to split the responsibilities down to lower subdivisions, who, in turn, do the same. These divisions often go all the way down to the planet level or perhaps the nations or landmasses of a planet, often the case in the Core Words' vicinity. The responsibilities and areas of governance of these rulers is often decided by the councillor of the given region, but the appoinment of them is by way of election among the region, as so deemed in the STUN's founding. This applies to the various subdivisions therein, so often, the bureocracy of elections can be rather slow and tedious, as well as potentially open to corruption, somewhat rare as it is.Territories and Major Locations
The STUN, as it currently stands, holds influence over approximately 12 000 larger states and 420 000 city- and habitat-states, consisting of a population of some 16 trillion, within a volume with an average radius of about 52 light-years. The majority of this population lives in the four major clusters of the region; the Core Worlds, the Odessines, Stars-Reached, and The Cajamarai Region. The main places of governance of the regions varies a lot, and is ultimately up to the councillor in question. Most, however, tend to be in important systems and on or in orbit of the planets within. There are also a number of administrative systems, usually housed in existing cities or habitats, though the Core Worlds and especially Sol have a number of dedicated habitats for managing the enormity of the STUN. The STUN holds five major headquarters within the Core Worlds, generally within important systems.Tax System
The STUN is, ultimately, not a very concrete thing. It does not demand the supply of a fully fledged nation, relatively speaking of course, and does not engage in trade itself. That said, it does need some supply and capital to function; this is gained by the tax system of the STUN, a suprisingly feudal-esque system. The STUN's main tax demand is military supplies. Manpower, starships, ammunition, leaders, and everything in between, is collected from member states, relative to their military spending, which must be on a certain percentage level. The specifics of the forces are determined by the local STUN governance, often in concert with the state itself. These forces are arranged into local defense forces, reserves, or other formations and detachments, and, while still partly tied to their origin state, are ultimately under the ASTUN's command. Another common tax export of member states is just raw money; often used to finance contracts and such for the ASTUN's rarer dedicated forces or for logistical management, as well as the wages of the STUN and ASTUN leadership and personnel.Economy
The STUN has no economy in and of itself, being a superstate that merely holds an amount of power over its constituent states. Within those states, trade is free and freely determined by the respective nation. The STUN does commission contracts and such from nations and companies at times, from dedicated war equipment for the ASTUN's standing forces or for some infrastructure project. The capital for these projects are funded by the tax system, and while most of those taxes are military equipment for the ASTUN, much goes to wages and especially research.ASTUN
The ASTUN, or Alliance of the STUN, is the military wing of the STUN, and a major part of its function as peacekeepers and potential combat forces. It is an entirely military entity, formed from the materiel and people collected via the STUN's tax systems.Structure
The highest authority in the ASTUN is the Committee of Generals of the ASTUN. This group consists of usually ten or so people of the highest rank in the ASTUN, Star-Cluster General. These people each command large sections of the ASTUN, though as always, interstellar communication being so slow necessitates subdivision and delegation of tasks and responsibility. Much like with the rest of the STUN, the ranks and organization of the ASTUN is intricate, and goes all the way down to individual squads and starship roles. Also like the STUN, it holds several headquarters throughout the Core Worlds. These double as star-forts, with capacity to house, command, and repair fleets of significant size, as well as considerable firepower and defensive abilities of its own. The actual military elements of the Alliance are generally organized into star-cluster-based troops. The size of these clusters varies, outer regions usually being composed of ten or so stars, and the inner regions of the Core Worlds tend to two or three stars. These forces, called Cluster Ready Defence Forces (CRDF), are headquartered in a specific region of the cluster, usually in one of the Lagrange points between the most important planet and its parent star. Here, the stations that harbour the fleet manage their respective CRDF, hosting various things from command centers, docks, living areas, and the like. Many can get to very substantial in size, often being multiple habitats linked together. The ASTUN also has various outposts in nearly all of its systems, from military bases to resupply stations and reserve fleets and easily mobilizeable defence arrays. Fleet and army compositions are highly varied, often inheriting elements of the militaries of their origin. There is standardization; the rank hierachies and ship classification are the same all through the STUN, yet most of what you find are often very different from each other. Due to the proximity to the Core Worlds, most are not exceptionally far apart in technological level, but the quality of the troops and equipment tend to be. Naturally, more wealthy places can produce better and more equipment, while nations with a heavy military culture or a situation which forces a focus on military matters, can often contribute more.Military Doctrine and Strategy
The ASTUN is primarily focused around being a defensive force. The organization of a given CRDF ensures a quick response to local attack, and the density of traffic, settlement, and STUN infrastructure even somewhat far from the Core Worlds allows for information of the attack to be dispersed throughout the STUN. From there, nearby forces can be diverted and dedicated as necessary, and the general nature of the attack's origin easily shared. In battle, the ASTUN, naturally, varies due to the nature of itself. That said, generally, tactics involving larger ships and heavy weaponry over smaller ones are the norm and encouraged. This allows managing large fleets and disparate fleets better, as well as leveraging the powerful industrial capacity of the Core Worlds. The technological advantage present over most of its opponents is also a large factor in strategy; this leads to many ASTUN forces being significantly more capable than their opponents, even if you compare ones of similar size and composition.Ranks
While the ASTUN does have its own ranking system within its relatively few dedicated forces, the STUN's constituent nations' militaries also have theirs, and they are generally preferred to align with the ancient code of NATO standard grade scaling, nowadays known as just the Standard Grade Scale. The Standard Grade Scale.Standard code | Definition | Examples |
---|---|---|
OR-1 (Enlisted) | Lowest. Often yet-untrained recruits. | - |
OR-2 (Enlisted) | The rank-and-file. Regular soldiery. | Pricata (AUOAF), Air-Trooper (ASTUN), Guardsman (AAF) |

OR-6 (NCO) | Higher still, these are often given training duties as well, especially in peacetime. | Senior Sergeant (WMA) |
OR-7 (NCO) | Often found less in the front, these ranks are used for instructing lower NCOs as well as in command of larger units. | Viabel (CICC) |
OR-8 (NCO) | Higher command positions and instructing as well as cross-unit advising tends to fall onto these roles. | - |
OR-9 (NCO) | Often found in advisory positions to higher officer ranks as well as regular command. | - |
OF-1 (Commissioned Officer) | Generally command a platoon, these officers cover a wide range, and can also serve in training roles and as seconds-in-command to higher ones. | Vinric (LPF), Lieutenant Primaris (SSF), Yliluutnantti (FDF), Santō Rikui (SCL) |
OF-2 (CO) | Most often command a company of soldiers or as seconds-in-command on starships. | Kapteeni (FDF) |
OF-3 (CO) | The lowest senior officer rank, these are often found in larger units like brigades, battalions or battlegroups as part of their command groups. | Levantes-Nes/Majuro/Landeman (Cellean autocratic space), Cisanti Superior (VUC) |
OF-4 (CO) | Usually in command of small battlegroups and as seconds-in-command to the next rank. | - |
OF-5 (CO) | Command large units, often brigades, and lead larger battlegroups of warships. Highest non-general rank. | Levantes/Cordinel/Amderend (Cellean autocratic space) |
OF-6 (General Officer) | Lowest of the general officer ranks. Also command brigades, as well as serving as commanders to large divisions of warships and often as command groups to the next rank. | Captain-Commander/Commander/High Commander (Cellean autocratic space) |
OF-7 (GO) | Command divisions of soldiers and entire fleets in some militaries, large parts of them in others. | Admiral-Captain/Admiral (Cellean autocratic space) |
OF-8 (GO) | Second highest in most militaries. Command army corps, fleets, and significant administrative positions as well as second-in-command roles to the next. | - |
OF-9 (GO) | The highest rank in most militaries. Often singular. In such cases, usually placed in command of an entire nation's military, as well as a position in whatever government it has. | Lord High Admiral (Cellean autocratic space), Star-Cluster General (ASTUN) |
OF-10 (GO) | The highest standard rank. Most militaries lack one entirely, and those that have one often have just one. Not even the Cellean empire had one, though that decision was mostly a logistical one. | Governing Star-Cluster General (ASTUN) |

The ASTUN is the giant of our era. Of multiple eras, indeed. From the painful recovery of the post-Fourth World War period in the 24th century to the peace and unprecedented developments of the 27th to modern era of the 29th century, rife with turbulence and tension once more, the STUN presided over the Core Worlds for all of it. The distant Cellean empire didn't last for three centuries, The Confederacies of the Ocinio cluster failed within two decades and quietly dissolved, and the legacy of the Nguruna, the expanding trade empire of the Bakarebu Stars is looking worse and worse by the day. Yet the STUN remains, resolute and unyielding. Perhaps this is due to its simple goal or somewhat disconnected nature, or something more intrinsic to the Core Worlds. Impossible to say. Yet those are the facts. The STUN remained for all the time it has, and it will remain for far longer still. Only when the threat of war is fully extinguished would it finally stop existing. And with how this "Coalition" appears in whispers in the outer rim regions, that day is distant.
