Abstract

The year is 4016 and 1262 years ago the population of Earth was brought together in a collection of centralized cities in Northern America. The rest of Earth was left abandoned, to slowly rot and be reclaimed by whatever nature humanity had left behind. Human culture has changed dramatically since this time as the population has reduced and resources have become more and more limited.   But what can these abandoned human cities tell us about the people who came many years before us? How different were they from us in their beliefs, fears and legends and what rituals and myths did they keep surrounding food? In this research project, I aim to discover and explore aspects of ancient human culture through remnants of food packaging and recipes found by archaeologists at various sites of ruined cities across the world.

Remnants of 'Snack' Packaging

Many archaeologists have uncovered remnants of metallized plastic film that we believe to be packaging for a food that would have been eaten for ease, convenience or just for fun. Referred to as a 'Snack' this type of food does not contain enough nutrients to feed an adult or a child and therefore we must deduce that it was used as a supplement alongside other regular nutrition.   Due to the prevalence of these remains we must also assume this kind of food was important either culturally or religiously, as it would not be considered necessary for survival on its own. By referring to our written knowledge of historical humans we know them to be frivolous and wasteful and these packaging remains further cement that belief.

The most prevalent form of this packaging found by archaeologists is believed to be for a food humans called 'Crisps' or 'Chips'. From information gathered from the packaging remains this 'Snack' appears to be made from a potato base and flavoured using a range of seasonings and chemicals.   The packages were small enough to hold in a single hand and based of information found on the packaging itself would have weighed around 30 grams (a unit of measurement that we still use today!) This packaging would have been brightly coloured through a range of unnecessary chemical processes and featured a range of designs based on who it was produced by. Images taken by archaeologists working on this project can be seen on the left.

Recipe: Potato Crisps

Ingredients

  • Potatoes
  • oil (any type)
  • salt
  • Method

  • Preheat the oven to around 180 Celsius/ 350 Fahrenheit (cooking time will vary dependent on temperature and oven).
  • Slice the potato as finely as you can into roughly circle shaped pieces.
  • Cover the slices in oil and some salt and set aside for 5-10 minutes.
  • Place on a tray in the oven and bake for 20-30 minutes checking about half way through and shaking the tray if needed.
  • Remove once the slices are golden brown and crispy.
  • Variations

Research has shown that common flavour variations included 'Salt and Vinegar', 'Cheese and Onion', and various meat flavourings.

Digital Messages of an Ancient Recipe

This source was discovered by a team of Digital Archaeologists working on this project. Digital archaeologists search the remains of the ancient internet to discover information left behind by ancient humans that can give us some insight into how they would have lived.   This source in particular is a series of internet messages exchanged on a social networking site that document a recipe passed down from a grandmother to her granddaughter. From this, we can assume that certain foods played a significant cultural (potentially ritualistic) role in ancient human relationships. This recipe may have been believed to have particular healing benefits, or it may have just been seen as a token of affection. Unfortunately, no further records of this conversation could be detected and so we are unable to know more.

    Recipe: Baked Apples

    Ingredients

  • some apples (as many as you want)
  • light brown sugar (a couple of tablespoons)
  • a handful of sultanas
  • small amount of butter
  • a teaspoon of cinnamon
  • Method

  • Preheat the oven to around 180 Celsius/ 350 Fahrenheit (cooking time will vary dependent on temperature and oven).
  • remove the core from all apples with an apple corer or knife (leaving a cylindrical channel through the centre of the apple).
  • mix the sultanas, sugar and cinnamon together until it tastes how you'd like.
  • fill the centre of the apples with this mixture, spreading it evenly between all the apples
  • place a small amount of butter on the top of each apple and bake for 20 minutes or until fully cooked.
  • serve with cream, ice cream or milk if available

The recipe to the left is almost an identical replica of the content found within the online message. While we believe that photographs of the completed dish may later have been shared, we are unfortunately unable to recover them.   This a common issue found when digital archaeologists discover a source that is only text based due to the fact that when ancient humans began to realise the effects their power consumption was having on the Earth, they chose to primarily preserve digital copies of written information. This means that for us, approximately 1200 years into the future, we have little to no idea what life looked like visually for these humans who came so far before us.

    Beliefs About Ancient Human Food

We knew ancient humans were wasteful, but to this extent?

Maybe this food was used for religious purposes, or kept because of superstition...

Or maybe it was kept because they wanted to keep it. Sometimes I think we read too far into things my friend...
    — a conversation between two researchers
Evidence suggests that ancient humans had a range of specific rituals and behaviours that they associated with food. This began the belief that food held many roles in their culture outside of their nutrition. Some researchers have also discovered ancient texts which describe food (particularly sweet foods) as having magical or supernatural properties. These texts have been leading evidence in undergoing research into the possibility of the supernatural nature of ancient humans. This research is still ongoing.

    Conclusion

To conclude, we still know very little about the lives and culture of ancient humans. However, our research strongly points to the prevalence of magic or supernatural abilities in their communities, and a reliance on food for social purposes.   This however does not justify their wastefulness, destructiveness and lack of care for the planet Earth. What we have learnt is that ancient humans are infinitely more complex than previously understood and our research must continue or else we will continue to misrepresent the past.

    Note to Reader:

No matter how much research goes into this project our thoughts will only ever be speculation and hypothesis. We can truly know what life was like for ancient humans and our guesses could be wildly inaccurate. All we can do as researchers is draw logical conclusions from the evidence presented towards us and hope that we drew the right conclusions.   However, human history is fascinating and in today's society where resources are so scarce, the food of ancient humans is something we can often only dream of eating ourselves. For this reason, I have attempted to include recipes with limited ingredients in order to help us experience the culture of humans who came before us.
