Week 1

Change

Change means a lot of things, but the simplest definition is "an act or process through which something becomes different." So, how can this affect our worlbuilding? I've seen a lot of people talking about social change, cultural change, even technological change. But the thing I want to focus on most is character change or character development; the way the outside world causes characters to change their ideas, beliefs, and feelings.   When I started this world I knew I wanted it to be character driven. But characters are influenced by their environments and companions and experiences. These things also change in themselves, and change the characters because of this. The idea that all change affects each other fascinates me and is something I'd like to explore in my worldbuilding.

A New World, and New Stories

So, it's summer camp 2024. I started using WorldAnvil last September (over six months ago!) and have participated in quite a few challenges, but this will be my first summer camp! Some of you will notice that this is not the same world that I started with last year, and that's for two reasons. Firstly, I just wasn't vibing with the old world, it was causing me stress and I wasn't having fun. I felt a pressure to create things for the people that followed me and that led to point two. Creative burnout.   Recognising this had helped me choose sensible goals for summer camp which I will talk about shortly.   I also really quickly need to point out the fact that the summer camp color scheme fits so nicely with my world!

Summer Camp Camp Chill Badge
Nnie's Camp Chill Guidelines
  • Remember the prompts are suggestions, not requirements.
  • Write what you're passionate about, leave what you aren't.
  • Relax when you feel tired.
  • Fight off any pesky brain-squitos trying to make you doubt your work.
  • Don't abandon your non-summercamp goals! Write that article you're itching to write, even if it doesn't fit any prompts.

Setting a Goal

Camp Chill

Camp chill was set up during summer camp 2023 by Nnie for those who wanted a more relaxed summer camp, and that is the vibe I want to bring forward into 2024. No stress. No pressure. Just worldbuilding.

Copper or Silver?

The perfectionist in me is currently screaming at me to change my mind and go for diamond, but that's unrealistic and I don't think I'll enjoy it. So, my decision is between 8 and 16 prompts, Copper or silver?   For a number of reasons, I've decided to aim for copper. If I end up writing lots and up with silver or gold? That's great! If not, I won't feel guilty about not meeting my goal. But whatever goal we choose, the main goal is to have a good time and enjoy our writing!

Categories and Tags

As this world is still very new (two finished articles!), I currently have a very basic category structure set up which will probably change. So, because of this, I plan on creating a summer camp category and working out how to tidy it all up later in the year.   In terms of tags, I use tags for both CSS and organization. I plan on tagging my articles by challenge, name, length and then any additional tags which provide CSS effects.

Ahhhh, The Meta!

I'm only half joking, because this world doesn't actually have a meta (yet!). Although, I've already done the css for it. One of my goals for this month is to put together at least a simple meta before summer camp begins. If I'll ever go back and look at it afterwards remains to be seen!   Week 2 Update: In looking at my CSS for the second week's assignments I have found that my meta CSS is actually quite broken. So, I'm going to try to fix that first.   Week 4 Update: We finally have a meta! The inspiration sections are embedded into the article below, but the full meta can be found by following the link on the world homepage.

Week 2

Refuge

In some ways this whole world is about refuge. The crew of The Last Voyage are searching for refuge from the secrets that haunt them, the USC puts their faith in The Last Voyage to find inhabitable land in space (a refuge for the people of planet earth), and the stars seek a refuge from human destruction. Everyone and everything in this world is searching for a place they can be free. Some believe that they have already found it, and others are still searching.   I hope within this theme I might also get the chance to talk about music, a very important but currently secret part of my world.

Accountability Buddies

I don't have much to say about this apart from mentioning the World Anvil discord server. I honestly couldn't ask for a better group of people to keep me motivated during challenges. Not to mention, I always find a million and one new things to read as well!

Styling and Layout

On the right side of the page, there is an example of some of my current styling. There's things I like about it, and there's things I don't. Because Starsong is a new world, I haven't quite figured out how I want to present information. Over the rest of this month I want to practise my formatting so I know what I'm doing before Summer Camp starts.

CSS!

I love, love, love CSS, even when I don't know what I'm doing (which is most of the time!). I had never done CSS before using World Anvil and so my knowledge of how best to lay it out is pretty much non-existent. So, before Summer Camp, I need to find a point where I am happy to leave my CSS so that I actually focus on my writing. I have two goals for this month:

Tidying and Organizing

My CSS is currently a mess with new parts being added on at the end. I have no idea where anything is, and fixing issues is nearly impossible. So, for my own sanity, I need to tidy it before summercamp. Part of this will also be adding variables as it will make my CSS easier to maintain (hopefully...)

New Headers

Currently, my h1, h2 etc all follow the default styling but with a few font/size changes. I want to do something a bit more unique but that also draws the eye around the page better. However, the tidying needs to come first.

Week 3

Belief

I think that belief is quite a tricky thing to write about in worldbuilding, but also one of the most important. In real life there are lots of different types of belief: religious, political, supernatural etc. Characters and organizations in our worldbuilding have these beliefs too (within the context of our worlds).   Within this theme, I would like to explore different character's beliefs about the supernatural and magic, drawing on the fantasy part of science-fantasy. I also hope to discuss how this contrasts those who believe magic is the opposite of science, and those who believe that both can co-exist.

Inspirations

Music

Maps

Starsong is a new world, and as of yet doesn't have a map. Plus, maps in a sci-fi setting are new for me and something I don't have much experience. I'd like to ideally have a map for the ship, a solar system map and maybe a few planet maps, but I will leave these until after summer camp so I don't get distracted!

Art and Pictures

One of my goals for this world is to develop my own artistic abilities. This means that (almost) all the art will be drawn by me. This does mean I may spend more time on individual articles so that I have time to illustrate them, but it should also mean that the articles are of higher quality.

Week 4

Decay

Decay: the constant change of life as it fades towards death. What this made me want to write about was Earth. In this universe, Earth is slowly dying (much to the horror of those who live there). Humankind is fighting to reverse this decay before it is too late.   I think this prompt would allow me to talk about changing landscapes, habitats and the species who live there; a topic I haven't explored very often before in my worldbuilding.

Optimizing Your Environment

This summercamp I will be doing a mix of writing at my desk, writing on paper, and writing on my phone. Personally, I need music to worldbuild, which means I will be creating a summer camp playlist at some point before the end of this month. Aside, from this I don't have very much to prepare before the challenge starts.

Review Your Homepage

As Starsong is a very new world, I am happy with my homepage as it currently is. As I write new articles and decide a direction for my worldbuilding, I will update it as seems fit.

Author Page

For the final summercamp assignment, I have updated my author page with links to my world.
