Overview

Earth Doodle by Adventures_of_Isle
Since the population of Earth became no more than a few cities, the seperate governments came together and formed the General Earth Governemnt (in 2800 a democratic organisation that makes desicions on behalf of Earth's remaining citizens.   There are many different sectors of the General Earth Governement, such as those that manage healthcare, education, and public transport among others. The few remaining cities also have their own representative branch of government that operates on a local level. Alongside these, there are a few advisory organisations that carry out a specific role but are not an official branch of the government. Of these, the most important two are The United Space Confederation and the Earthen Ecological Society.

The Conflict

Prelude

Two sides of the Story

The Earthen Ecological Society

The Earthen Ecological society is an organisation that works towards prioritising planet Earth and to keep it habitable for as long as posscible. They advise the government on topics such as energy consumption, use of materials and ask for funding to be put towards their projects. These projects mainly consist of research teams sent on continental expiditions to monitor the viability of other parts of the planet. With this information, they hope to keep Earth alive for as long as possible, and reverse some of the damage caused by humanity.

The United Space Confederation

The United Space Confederation were established in 3256 in order to facilitate humankind's desire to persue spaceflight once more (this was at the end of the 1000 year spaceflight ban). Their job was to develop new means of space travel, work towards technological advancement, and begin to research whether there might be other life out in space.   Ultimately, although not often discussed, their goal was to find another planet (or planets) that could sustain human life in the events that the Earth becam uninhabitable.

The Seeds of Discord

When the spaceflight ban was lifted in 3256 and the USC was formed, tensions grew between the USC and the Earthen Ecological Society. The Earthen Ecological society was angry with the government, because they believed that by putting funding towards space exploration, they were neglecting the Earth and causing it further damage. Because of this, they focused a lot of their efforts on having funding taken away from the USC.   As a newly formed organisation, the USC struggled with being immediately thrust into the spotlight of political debate. The more missions they sent and research they did that had no immediate result, the less people believed in their goals and the more funding they lost. Even when their work was leading towards technological advances, their inability to find any other habitable planet made people lose their faith.

Outcome

One Last Chance

The 2nd Spaceflight ban

After much pressure from the Earthen Ecological society, the government decided that they would cut funding to the USC and reintroduce the spaceflight ban. From research data, they concluded that the search for habitable planets was unsuccesful, a drain on resources and was damage to the Earth's atmsophere.

The Last Voyage

Before this happened, they released funding for a final mission by the USC, called The Last Voyage. The goal of this mission was both a last ditch attempt to complete their goals, but also as a response to the strange signals that Earthen scientists had been recieving from space.

Historical Significance

Technological Advancement

Even though the spaceflight ban was reintroduced, and the USC did cause environmental damage, their work caused many developments in technology. They found ways to make more efficient use of fuel, develop new methods of transport, and generally improved technology in all industries. This greatly benefited the work of the Earthen Ecological Society, as the technologies created often benefited the environment.

The damage they've caused is inexcusable, but they have made some great changes at the same time.
