Magnetic Vox
Captain, can you hear me? Please, whatever you do, do not open the puzzlebox! We finally translated the rest of the documents we found, and it's not for keeping something safe inside, it's to keep everything outside safe-!
The distances of space are vast, and only through the bending of the laws of reality can we traverse them. Such tasks become even harder when all you are attempting to do is throw something as ephemeral as a voice across the stars.
The Magnetic Vox is the galaxies only real method of long distance communication, other than simple courier work, relying on large satellites within the magnetic spheres of stars to direct messages. This does mean that to get a message from point A to point B, there has to be a perfect storm of solar size, distance from solar neighbors, and recipient positioning for messages to make it to their desired destination.
While quick, the Magnetic Vox also has problems with security, with messages sent with it being somewhat easy to intercept, though it is not always possible to tell where the message was coming from or where it was going. Even so, anyone who is attempting to send messages will likely need to send in code if they have any suspicion of need to do so.
Most stellar ships are equipped with a magnetic vox appropriate for their size, and emergency purposes. These units require trained and skilled operators, otherwise messages will simply come in as a garbled mess.
