Gel Munitions
You mean to tell me they used to have to transport mass amounts of powder that would ignite, explosively, at the touch of a spark?
Hah! Well I'll take transporting this gel stuff any day over that, I'll tell you what! Hey, don't touch those vials, they're incredibly touchy-!
Granular munitions propellant, while certainly functional, has a few flaws. One, the fact that it can't get wet or it becomes temporarily useless. Two, It's volatility. Three, it's density leaves something to be desired in transportation, especially across stellar distances. These problems are not insurmountable by any sense, of course, but as firearms bearing species made their way to the stars, they found that they needed something else to serve their martial purpose.
While the exact mixture varies from producer to producer, the basic idea is the same across the board. Highly explosive compounds distilled into a shelf stable and non-expirational gel that easily maintains it's form unless acted upon by an outside force. Perfect for ammunition of all sizes, all while being more potential-energy dense than traditional granular munitions, pushing forward the field of the ballistic sciences.
Some weapons producers have developed lines of gel munitions that are solid enough to also be used in a fashion similar to plastic explosives.
