Ship Sections Reputation System

The goal of this system is to represent how influential each character's reputation is within the social and military structure of the ship, and to aid the PCs in their eventual mutiny, making it easier to take over the ship at the finale of the campaign. Reputation is tracked by Ship Section, and is increased based upon story events during the campaign, or as a downtime activity involving a skill test. It will be tracked on my tracking spreadsheet, and maybe in game if I can find a fun way to represent it.

The Ship and the Crew

The crew of the Scylla (and her small flotilla of support vessels) is divided into the sections listed below, representing both physical people or locations, and the duties implied by that category, and is abstracted on a numerical scale from 0 to 6. All PCs will start with a rank in their Home Section, and will choose one other during session zero that their character has a connection to.

Ship Sections

  • Command / Bridge Officers
  • Deck
  • Engineering
  • Intelligence / Internal Security
  • Medical
  • Ship Armory / Stormtrooper Detachment: Marines (Platoon Aurek, led by Lt. Telian, who leads the ship's Marine detachment and is the Master-at-Arms.)
  • Stormtrooper Detachment: Regulars (Platoon Besh, led by Lt. Aras)
  • Stormtrooper Detachment: Specialists (Platoon Cresh, led by Lt. Horne, includes Scouts, Spacetroopers, Skytroopers, and Snowtroopers)
  • Stormtrooper Detachment: Support Platoon (Platoon Cherek, led by Lt. Jado, includes Light Artillery and Squad-Supported Weapon Teams)
  • Space Wing: TIE Fighter Pilots
  • Space Wing: Support Craft Pilots (Shuttles, etc.)
  • Space Wing: Technical & Support (the various officers & enlisted who oversee, maintain, and coordinate the above vessels)
Additionally, influence can be gained aboard other fleet vessels, though these ranks will likely not factor into the final mutiny (unless you are very creative!):
  • Argus: a Raider-class Corvette (crew of ~150)
  • Atalanta: a Gozanti-class, carrier variant (Crew of 8, can carry 4 TIEs + pilots)
  • Tychon: Gozanti-class, EWS variant (Crew of 12)
Or with the local garrison of the Imperial Army & Planetary forces, though again, these ranks will not directly factor into the final mutiny:
  • Belassar-3 Imperial Army Garrison
  • Belassar Orbital Station Defense Crew

The Ranks

  • Rank 0: Stranger. No one in the section knows you, or cares.
  • Rank 1: Acquaintence. People might remember your name, or somethign you did.
  • Rank 2: Regular. People will know you, and you can ask for small favors without spending rank.
  • Rank 3: Friend. People in this section like you. Whatever you need, they'll try to help you with.
  • Rank 4: Respected. The people in this section trust your judgement, maybe even more than their CO.
  • Rank 5: Trusted. You've earned the trust of the people in charge, and that means a lot.
  • Rank 6: Honored. Your deeds (or misdeeds!) are legendary within the section.

Increasing Rank - Ranks 1-4

During downtime, a character may choose to spend their time (and/or resources) increasing their reputation with a given Section. For the first 3 ranks, a skill test will be run vs a difficulty set by the Storyteller, see below. The same skill cannot be used to increase the same Section twice in a row.    Credits may be spent (representing buying drinks, gifts, intentionally losing at gambling, or other expenditures) to add Boost dice to the pool for 100 credits x the value of rank you want to increase to, up to twice per attempt. Boost dice can also be earned via RP, things like handing over surplus loot to the armory or passing actionable information to Intelligence are appropriate actions. Rather than track each section individually for this, I'll simply abstract it: smaller RP actions taken to support the Scylla will net you a Boost die that can be used on any roll. Additionally, Discretionary Funds can be used to purchase large quantities gifts, bribes, or other appropriate methods of buying favor. These will translate into an Upgrade that can be used on any dice roll for each member of the crew.   The difficulty of the test for ranks 0-4 will be equal to the desired rank: Easy (1P) for rank 1, Average (2P) for rank 2, etc. Triumph results can be spent to gain two ranks at a time, up to rank 5.

Increasing Rank - Ranks 5-6

Unless you roll a Triumph when ascending to rank 4, Ranks 5-6 can only be obtained by working with the Storyteller to do a social encounter against a relevant NPC, probably the Section leader, or by an appropriate action in the main campaign.

Downtime Example

Private Ganner, a Stormtrooper Medic, decides to start with 1 rank of influence within the Medical Section, because they coordinate with the Navy medical personnel, use the same supplies, and share a rapport based on mutual understanding of combat medicine. They decide to lean in to this, and during their first downtime, they spend it helping out with the ship's Medical section. The player describes how an outbreak of an irritating-but-treatable disease spreads throughout the crew, and how Pvt. Ganner in called in to assist the ship's doctor's as most of the crew goes through a wave of nausea and itching, and furthermore, Ganner decides to invest some of his own money to help out-- buying medicine from an offship trader, perhaps. They spend 200 credits, 2 [the rank they're trying to attain] x 100, and gain a Boost die on the skill test. They would then take an appropriate skill test, Medicine in this case, and upon passing it successfully, gain a rank of influence within the section, attaining rank 2.

Influence Rewards

In addition to aiding in the eventual, long-term goal of taking over the ship at the climax of the campaign, influence with a Ship Section can be spent to provide benefits-- some good old fashioned quid pro quo. Small favors, such as borrowing a piece of gear (of a rarity less than twice the influence rank, and based on availability-- the Scylla does not have a secret stash of Jedi Holocrons) for a mission, or winning some credits (influence rank x 20) can be asked for once per downtime with no penalty or check required. A player may choose to decrease their reputation with a section (to a minimum of 1), gaining a permanent boon instead-- we'll have to work out exactly what this is, but bigger things like a follower, use of ship or heavy weapon support (scenario-allowing, of course), or in-world promotions & favors would fall into this category.
