Andorians
Species Name: Andorian
Homeworld: Andoria (also called Andor), a moon orbiting the gas giant Procyon VIII
Physiology: Andorians are blue-skinned, white-haired humanoids with a pair of mobile cranial antennae. These antennae are sensitive to motion, electromagnetic fields, and temperature gradients, playing a critical role in balance, orientation, and nonverbal communication. Andorians are physiologically adapted to extreme cold and maintain a high basal metabolism. They are notably susceptible to exhaustion and certain systemic infections when wounded.
Antennae loss results in severe disorientation and sensory disruption until regrowth occurs (approx. 9 months without medical acceleration).
Cultural Overview:
- Social Structure: Andorian society was historically organized around clan lines and a now-declining polyamorous marriage model of four bonded individuals (shelat, zhen, chan, and thaan). Some traditions persist, especially in rural Andoria or among conservative diaspora.
- Values: Honor, duty, loyalty, and directness dominate Andorian cultural frameworks. While not emotionless, Andorians are known for stern discipline and a stoic approach to conflict.
- Military Tradition: Andorians were one of the founding militaristic pillars of the Federation. Their warrior caste history lingers, particularly in their view of Starfleet service as a form of ritual combat and societal contribution.
Typical Roles in Starfleet:
- Frequently assigned to Security, Tactical, and Command tracks.
- Andorian officers often rise quickly in hazardous postings, first-contact security, or planetary operations due to battlefield initiative and field hardiness.
- Their instincts and antennae give them an edge in navigation, piloting, and spatial tactical positioning.
Species Mechanics (STA 2e, RAW + expansions):
ATTRIBUTES: +1 Control, +1 Daring, +1 Presence
TRAIT: Andorian
- Reduce Difficulty of resisting cold or low-temperature conditions.
- Antennae enhance balance and spatial awareness (may justify Advantage in spatial or orientation-related tasks, GM discretion).
- Loss of an antenna inflicts +1 Difficulty to tasks involving spatial awareness, coordination, or close combat, until healed.
- High metabolism: susceptible to fatigue and exotic infections (GM may introduce Complications or +1 Difficulty when appropriate).
SPECIES ABILITY — INTENSE:
When you succeed at a task where you purchased one or more d20s by adding to Threat, generate 1 bonus Momentum for each d20 purchased this way. Bonus Momentum may not be saved or stored.
Narrative Hooks:
- An Andorian character might struggle with modern Federation diplomacy, where cultural directness clashes with indirect political protocol.
- A clan rivalry or inheritance feud could trail them into their service.
- An Andorian on prolonged away missions may experience thermoregulatory issues if confined to warm or humid environments.
- Federation-standard medical care often overlooks antenna trauma recovery—this can open room for cultural resentment or exploration.
