The USS Okuda seeks to prevent a spatial anomaly from destroying a Tholian colony. They discover that it is a Matryoshka Brain, and convince one of the entities inhabiting it, Mercury, to turn the phenomena away from inhabited worlds. The entity joins the crew as bosun HiGS.
Fss'Karr was a direct-line descendant of Marar and rose to prominence as leader of Sentient Kzinretti insurgency. Over the next two generations, this movement had become an open rebellion.
An open rebellion in Kzin society leads to an all-out war between Traditional Males and Kzinretti Insurgents. Though the Kzinretti win many important battles, the Traditionalists prevail. Insurgences diaspora: in order to protect the movement, the Insurgency leaders order small colonies to be spread throughout the quadrant. This process continues for hundreds of years, as colonies are established and spread to other worlds.
Hscarra of Neffsif connected key Kzinretti colonies called the "String of Worlds." She began to move openly and with confidence against the Patriarchy.
The Burn. was a galaxy-wide disastrous event that occurred in roughly 3069, in which most dilithium mysteriously went inert, causing the detonation of every active warp core. The event caused widespread death and destruction, made dilithium an even more sought-after resource, and led to the near-collapse of the United Federation of Planets.
On this day, every active warp core detonated, ushering in a new Dark Ages across the galaxy.
The Patriarchy lost many of their ships in The Burn . The Kzinretti, though, used drives powered by singularities, which they had purchased from the Romulans. Seizing the opportunity, Z'sharr, daughter of Hscarra, moved against the Patriarchy.
Caught in the temporal effect of the Matryoshka Brain, the OKUDA crew emerges in the future and finds themselves embroiled in a war between the Klingons and the Kzinti.
