Constables
While most parts of St. Peregrine's have some sort of watchmen, the individual nature of the organizations -- and the watchmen themselves -- vary from area to area. The central part of the Lower City is patrolled by the Central Urban Constabulary Force. The lowest rank of which are Patrol Constables (more often, simply "Constables"). Constables are pear-shaped automatons which were created and are maintained by The Sisters of the Perpetual Mysteries.
A typical Constable is about 5.5' high, and built of riveted copper. They are similar in shape to an inverted light bulb and roll around on three large wagon-style wheels affixed near the base equidistant around the circumference. Each wheel is about 2' in diameter. Earlier models of the Constable have only two wheels and are obliged to exhibit sort of a rocking back and forth motion when standing still, or else they can tip over. The lower hemisphere of a Constable is painted a deep red. Some Constables have a dark blue painted "cap" , and some of those with the blue paint also have a single gold star within the blue-painted area. What the color and stars indicated is unknown.
Constables have a long whiplike attenna which comes off of their back and connects to an overhead cable, which supplies power, allows them to communicate amongst themselves and with their station of origin, and to navigate their section of St. Peregrine's. Constables are not aggressive and have no weaponry. They have limited intelligence and vocabulary, serving more as literal watchmen than as law-enforcement agents.
Constables have rudimentary audio production capabilities. While there are dozens of different words and phrases in the collective vocabulary of The Constables, it's rare for an single unit to possess a vocabulary of more than about 20 words or phrases.
