Shulanite Traditional Fashion

Shulanite traditional fashion is the traditional and historical fashions of the Shulanite culture and still influences everyday wear or is itself worn for formal wear. There are both more traditional fashions, often worn for formal wear, and then more modernised styles that have more influence from other cultures and are worn for everyday wear.

Shulanite fashion, like most of Shulanite culture, is heavily affected by the culture’s strong gender binary with there being different fashion norms for male versus female wearers, or masculine and feminine styles. Masculine clothing tends to be darker, typically only using bright colors for accents. Feminine clothing on the other hand, tends to use brighter colors as well as using more rectangular or high waisted silhouettes. and tends to be more robelike in shape.

Clothing

Base layer

The traditional Shulanite outfit is based around a long sleeved high necked tunic with a pair of loose trousers worn underneath. The basics of the base layer are the same across the genders, with minimal differences making it more masculine or more feminine.

The feminine base layer tends to have a longer tunic, often reaching at least the knees if not longer. Sometimes, when the longer dresslength tunics are worn, women may not wear the trousers beneath but this is less common.

Masculine base layers tend to have a shorter tunic typically only thigh or knee length. Men’s trousers also tend to be simpler and less decorated than women’s trousers, often being more utilitarian.

Outer layer

Jackets are a common form of outerwear especially in places with colder weather. These jackets are often long or quarter sleeved, full length, and open in the front needing fasteners to stay closed. There are also other forms of outerwear like vests, shawls, and cloaks.

Feminine outerwears tends to have more colorful and patterned fabric, with thigh length hems and low cut necklines being popular. Women also may wear large shawls over their clothing; this is a feminine style and is rarely if ever worn by men.

Masculine outwear tends to be dark, often with a bright inner lining for that pop of color, and often is full length and robelike. The sleeves of these robes may be full sleeves or may only be quarter length, it depends on the weather and the style of the wearer.

Shoes

Flats and boots are the most common forms of footwear, especially for traditional or formal outfits. More modern footwear like sneakers are commonly worn for everyday wear as are other mass-produced shoes.

Headgear

Women’s Cap

A short brimless cap is often worn by women, either by themselves or as part of a larger look involving a veil or hat. These caps are typically only a few inches tall and tend to be cylindrical or slightly pointed in shape with a flatter top. These hats may sit on top of the hair, or the hair may be tucked up into the cap, it depends on the style.

Women’s Veil

Veiling is often done by women, both for sun protection and warmth as well as for modesty. There are a few different styles ranging from veiling that covers only the top and back of the head leaving some hair visible, to veiling that covers the wearer's forehead, hair, and neck. This veiling is seen as very feminine and it is very rare for men or masculine folks to wear them.

When Shawls are worn, they are often draped and styled similar to these veils. These veils may be worn over the wearer's bare head or they may be worn overtop of a Woman’s cap or other headwear.

Hairstyles

Long hair is the norm for everyone, with most people keeping their hair shoulder length at least. Short hair is associated with monasticism, as monks will typically have their hair shaved and kept short to prevent vanity.

Women will often style their hair in a long braid or bun, with half up styles also being very popular especially for everyday wear.

Men will often wear their hair in tied back styles like a simple ponytail or bun, more focused on practicality over flashiness. Beards are not common or popular among the Shulanite population.

Jewelry

Traditional Shulanite jewelry focuses a lot on rings and bracelets and not a lot on necklaces. Earrings and decorative headpieces are also common, but typically only for feminine outfits.

Caps and veils are often decorated with dangling pendants on the forehead, either sewn to the brim of the hat or veil or as a separate circlet-like piece worn overtop the headwear. These circlet pieces may also be worn by themselves over the wearer's hair.

Hair is often tied off with a decorative cuff made of metal and often decorated with gems. The smaller cuffs may be able to stay on by themselves but larger ones may include a hairstyle to help keep it secure.
